Constantine was released in 2005 to mixed reviews, and while it’s unclear if the sequel will ever happen, there are plenty of reasons to be excited about it. The Constantine sequel was announced to be in the works in 2022, but it remains to be seen whether the project will move forward. With DC currently focusing on establishing a new cinematic universe overseen by James Gunn, projects like Constantine 2 would only work as Elseworlds stories.

Constantine may be one of the darkest fantasy movies of all time, incorporating horror elements well-suited to director Francis Lawrence. This movie only has 46% on Rotten Tomatoes, despite being one of the most engaging, well-conceived, and original action and horror flicks of the 2000s. Based on the DC Comics character, the movie took a lot of creative liberties but delivered a highly entertaining mix of stylized violence and character-driven drama.

Constantine (2005) Has Increased In Popularity Since The Movie’s Release
Constantine Had A Lukewarm Reception
Close
The original Constantine movie had a lukewarm reception but has increased in popularity since 2005. The movie was rejected at the time, partially due to a lack of faithfulness to the comics, and partially due to its starkly original approach. The movie’s dark fantasy and cynical lead weren’t for everyone. But with time, critics of the movie realized its merits, making a sequel alluring to many.
John Constantine’s future in live-action is unclear, particularly since the announcement of James Gunn’s new DC Universe, which has already included supernatural characters.
Now that the movie has had time to marinade in the minds of Keanu Reeves fans, Hellblazer fans, DC fans, and fantasy fans, it seems less controversial and shocking. The movie’s newness was confusing to some, at first. But in time, Constantine’s influence made itself clear, with its impact running through TV shows like Good Omens, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, and Lucifer. Constantine 2 will get the audience it deserves.

Constantine 2 Could Be A DC Elseworlds Experiment
Constantine 2 Can Show DC Elseworlds’s Potential
Close
Excitingly, Constantine 2 may be a DC Elseworlds project. As a movie based on the DC Constantine comics, Constantine was a part of the DC world, despite not tying in with any other movies or TV shows at the time. Now that the DC Extended Universe has come to an end and its successor, DC Studios’ DC Universe, has begun, DC projects are all being categorized in a certain way.

Movies or TV shows that don’t fit into the overarching DC Universe that will dominate superhero movies will be labeled as DC Elseworlds projects. These stories can exist outside the DCU canon, enabling different actors to portray DCU characters if needed and enabling the exploration of familiar DC stories in alternative settings. Joker: Folie à Doix is an example of an Elseworlds production. Constantine 2 may well be considered Elseworlds as well.

The Visuals In A Sequel Can Be Even Better Than The Original
Constantine 2 Should Have Better Effects
Close
The CGI of Constantine 2 would be far better than that of Constantine. As the Constantine ending makes clear, 2005’s computer-generated imagery is lacking compared to today’s. At the time, the movie’s graphics were solid, but VFX has come a long way since then. Granted, not all modern superhero movies look great, but Constantine is a character that can benefit from inspired and creative visuals.
Constantine being dragged to hell would have looked very different with contemporary visual effects.
The scenes of demons and angels in Constantine made it a possession thriller par excellence, riffing on the religious themes that made the comics amazing. Now, 20 years’ worth of technology can offer the story so much more. For example, Constantine being dragged to hell would have looked very different with contemporary visual effects and fans can now discover exactly what that means.

Constantine 2 Would Be An Excitingly Different Take On The Character After The Female Constantine
Jenna Coleman Made An Excellent Constantine Recently
Close
Constantine 2 may nod to the first on-screen female Constantine. Jenna Coleman played Johanna Constantine in Netflix’s Sandman, adapting the comic-book interaction between Dream and Constantine. This was probably the most unique portrayal of the Constantine family in its cinematic history, and Constantine 2 will, at the very least, be following on from its creative effect.
Johanna and John Constantine are two separate characters. The only other actor to have portrayed John Constantine in live-action is Matt Ryan, who portrayed the anti-hero in a short-lived solo series as well in the Arrowverse. Ryan also voiced Constantine in the DCAMU.
The Sandman Constantine actor responded to the news of Constantine 2 positively. Coleman said of the movie’s progress “I’d love to take credit for it.” Coleman was half joking but may be right that the ongoing interest in the Constantine name probably contributed to the recent progression of the longstanding Constantine 2 project.

Constantine 2 Could Be More Comic Accurate
The Constantine Sequel Could Be Closer To The Comics
Close
The original Constantine movie did not adapt any particular arc from the comics. Rather, it mixed various elements of them and added some of its own. This made it less faithful than it could have been but fit for the runtime and pacing of a feature-length movie. Constantine 2 has a chance to respond to feedback about the franchise’s first outing and, excitingly, bring in even more comic arcs and characters.
John Constantine is the main character of the Hellblazer comics, which launched in 1988.
From the original Alan Moore comic book to the modern DC Comics stories, John Constantine has been in plenty of great books. With no shortage of titles to pull from, Constantine 2 could easily be more faithful to the comics than its predecessor. That said, the sequel would still have to follow the themes and the lore established in the first film.

Constantine 2 could end up showing off other DC characters. A lot has changed with DC since Constantine’s 2005 release. In 2005, comic adaptations were nowhere near as pervasive as they are in the 2020s. With all this experience to build on and the advent of the multiverse, DC could incorporate Constantine 2 into its DCU, adding some of the universe’s fan favorites to the movie.

Even if Constantine 2 did not fall into the DCU, there are DC characters from the Hellblazer comics and surrounding publications that could make it into the story. The sequel could even make up for the many scrapped Justice League Dark projects if it involves characters like Zatanna or Swamp Man, although this doesn’t seem very likely given the self-contained nature of the first film.

Peter Stormare’s Excellent Lucifer May Return
Peter Stormare Was A Huge Part Of Constantine
Close
There are many great actors who played the devil, but Peter Stormare may be one of the best. Starring as Lucifer in Constantine, Stormare was terrifying and oddly understandable all at once. Lucifer looked fairly reasonable next to the God of the movie, who came off as the worst villain of them all. Stormare survived the movie and remained a key player in Constantine’s life.
Lucifer’s importance in the story signifies the decent possibility of Stormare’s return to the movie series. Stormare has talked about returning for a Constantine sequel, expressing hesitance about the project. However, ultimately, he seems ready to join it if it progresses.

Plenty Of Supporting Characters Can Be Revisited
Constantine Had A Big Cast
Close
Constantine had a great range of supporting characters, including Tilda Swinton as Gabriel and Shia LaBeouf as Chas. Tilda Swinton likely won’t star in Constantine 2, having confirmed that she has not yet been contacted about it. However, Constantine ended with a fascinating post-credits scene.
Constantine’s friend, Chas, became an angel toward the end of Constantine. Constantine‘s post-credits scene teased a sequel, and it looked like Chas may be central to it. If any two characters seem likely to feature in Constantine’s sequel, it is John and Chas. This would be a fantastic double act to see in the new movie, bringing a hugely sympathetic duo to an inevitably ominous plot.

Keanu Reeves Has Grown As An Actor Since The First Constantine
Keanu Reeves Will Be Even Better Than Last Time
Close
Keanu Reeves has 20 years more experience as an actor for Constantine 2 than he had for Constantine. Reeves was brilliant in Constantine, carving out his position as a stern leader in a dangerous position. He was building on his heroic role as Neo in The Matrix, a similarly severe and long-suffering type. Since then, Reeves launched and expanded the John Wick franchise as well as plenty of other roles.
This incredibly popular action movie series proved that Keanu Reeves truly was the archetypal stoic hero. Reeves has also proved his comedy chops as well, in various positions, demonstrating a new direction that Constantine 2 could take. Reeves’ varying roles since 2005 could provide Constantine 2’s screenwriters with ample inspiration for a nuanced new John, and Reeves will be well-positioned to play him.

Constantine Will Have To Be Good To Stay Out Of Lucifer’s Grasp
Constantine Will Have To Keep Fighting Demons
Close
Perhaps the most exciting thing about Constantine 2 is the certainty of more demon-fighting action. John Constantine was returned to life by Lucifer at the end of Constantine to spite him. John Constantine was on his way to heaven and Lucifer was determined that John’s soul should actually be his. Returning John to life meant that he had a whole lifetime to mess up and prove himself worthy of hell.
Constantine will definitely be trying to avoid Lucifer’s hellish grasp in Constantine 2. Knowing how awful hell is should make him extra scared of ending up there at the end of his life. This will most likely make Constantine more set than ever on fighting demonic presences. Whether or not a Constantine sequel sticks to the comics, it has great potential if it actually moves forward.
