Colin Creevey’s Absence Gets Too Much Attention When The Harry Potter Movies Messed Up These 10 Characters Way Worse

Harry Potter reached a huge audience in the 2000s through the movies, but some characters didn’t get a fair turn in the limelight. J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter books, published from 1997 and starting with Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, ended up defining millennial childhoods, introducing hundreds of characters adored worldwide. When Warner Bros. started adapting the books into movies, there were understandable criticisms from the fandom, and Colin Creevey was just one of the characters focused on. Plenty more were underused or left out altogether, which is partially what prompted the upcoming TV show.

While the Harry Potter movies were flawlessly cast, well-acted, and also had excellent effects, they left something to be desired for many. Warner Bros. Discovery owns Home Box Office (HBO) and Max (formerly known as HBO Max), the streaming service that will air the Harry Potter show after HBO. Warner Bros. saw that it had an opportunity following its Harry Potter movies and decided to monetize fans’ feedback. Now, it’s working on a TV show that may dive deep into the Harry Potter characters left behind by the movies.

The Prime Minister Of The United Kingdom

Featured In Book Six

Close

The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom was a brilliant inclusion in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, but he was cut from the movies entirely. The U.K. PM didn’t have a major role in the books, so it is understandable if the movies removed him to save valuable runtime for other important events. However, the Prime Minister was an interesting facet of the book as he showed that not every single muggle was in the dark about witches and wizards.

There is some intriguing parody potential to this character.

The Prime Minister in the Harry Potter books was in touch with Cornelius Fudge, the Minister for Magic, who dropped by to summarize the significant events of the Wizarding World that could impact him. The Harry Potter TV show would do well to include this part of the story, as this could certainly make for an amusing scene. Especially if it is considered that the British P.M. in 1996 (the time of the chapter) was John Major. There is some intriguing parody potential to this character.

Marietta Edgecombe

Close

Marietta Edgecombe was Cho Chang’s best friend in the Harry Potter books and didn’t feature in the movies, unfortunately. Although Marietta was hardly one of Harry Potter’s main characters, she had quite an important role that precipitated significant other events. Harry’s budding relationship with Cho – his love interest – was waylaid by his suspicion that she had betrayed Dumbledore’s Army.

The Marauders are some of Harry Potter’s most intriguing characters, so I’ve always wanted some kind of prequel, and some fanfiction fits the bill.

This wasn’t heavily addressed by the movies, but the books clarified that it was Cho’s best friend, Marietta, who had betrayed Harry and his activities. The TV show could portray this to its fullest, emphasizing that Marietta’s mother worked at the Ministry of Magic as a Floo Network Regulator. Edgecombe feared that her mother’s position would be at risk if Dolores Umbridge, one of the worst Hogwarts’ headmasters of the Harry Potter series, found out that she was colluding with Dumbledore’s Army.

Phineas Nigellus Black

Featured In Books Five To Seven

Close

Phineas Nigellus Black was in a portrait that helped Dumbledore in dark times, and this was sadly underrepresented by the Harry Potter movies. This character, as one of the notorious Black family, was naturally key to the political goings-on of the narrative, with Sirius the felon who turned out to be Harry’s Godfather first cousin to Bellatrix Lestrange, who ended up having Voldemort’s child. Although not as integral to the plot as Sirius or Bellatrix, Phineas certainly played his part.

More can be discovered about Bellatrix Lestrange’s child with Voldemort in the play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.

A distant forebear of Sirius and Bellatrix, Phineas was alive generations before them, and only participated in Harry Potter as a sitter of a portrait painted long ago. This portrait was hung in Dumbledore’s office, while Phineas also featured in a portrait in the Black family home. As per the norms of paintings in the world of Harry Potter, this enabled Phineas to act as a spy, funneling crucial information back and forth during the Second Wizarding War.

Rodolphus Lestrange

Featured In Books Four, Five, And Seven

The wizard and Death Eater Rodolphus Lestrange was Bellatrix’s husband, and he didn’t get much of a role in the movies. His involvement in the Second Wizarding War proved that it wasn’t just Bellatrix who was staunchly loyal as a Voldemort supporter. For all Voldemort’s use of Horcruxes in Harry Potter, it was his faithful Death Eaters who ensured his rise to power, and Rodolphus may have been one of the most useful.

In Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Rodolphus told Bellatrix and Voldemort’s daughter, Delphini, about her heritage.

Rodolphus tortured Neville Longbottom’s parents along with his wife and Barty Crouch Junior, making him a key precursor to Neville’s personal tragedy and eventual heroism. But mostly, Rodolphus makes Lord Voldemort a better villain, making his support seem genuine, rather than based on fear. Rodolphus was prepared to go to Azkaban to declare his allegiance to the Dark Lord.

Ludovic Bagman

Featured In Book Four

Close

Ludovic Bagman, informally known as Ludo, played a huge role in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, but not so in the movie. Directed by Mike Newell with a screenplay by Steve Kloves, this movie adapted Harry’s mysterious entry into the Triwizard Tournament. Ludo was Head of the Department of Magical Games and Sports at the Ministry of Magic, and therefore had a huge part in organising the tournament.

As an ex-Quidditch player, Ludo was a big name, and his inclusion in the TV show could provide either a bumbling idiot or a lovable, troubled soul.

Ludo would be a fun character for the Harry Potter TV series to tackle due to his incessant gambling addiction. Ludo was gunning for Harry to win the tournament for all the wrong reasons, creating the opportunity for a timely message and also humorous situations. As an ex-Quidditch player, Ludo was a big name, and his inclusion in the TV show could provide either a bumbling idiot or a lovable, troubled soul.

Winky

Featured In Book Four

Alongside Dobby and Kreacher, Winky’s input into the Harry Potter narrative is really important. While Dobby is the hero House Elf of the story, the others of the species were seriously underused in the movies. While Winky was a victim of the cruelty of the Crouch family, Kreacher was actually fairly mistreated by Sirius Black, and showing both of these phenomena would have brought a strong new angle proceedings.

Just as Sirius wasn’t quite as well-rounded in the movies as he was in the books due to the lack of development around Kreacher, Winky’s exclusion from the movies left a big hole in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Depressed and alcoholic in the wake of being freed (equivalent to being fired) by the Crouch family, Winky served as an important conduit of information in the story around the Triwizard Tournament, and the Crouch family’s part in it.

Percy Weasley

Featured In Books One To Seven

Close

Percy Weasley disappeared from the Harry Potter movies despite his unique position in the Weasley family and all the fascinating nuance it brought to the family and world overall. Percy was a bit of a black sheep in the Weasley family, the direct opposite of Fred and George. Serious while they were always making jokes, Percy took his duties as prefect too seriously for many people’s liking, although this did lead to his career at the Ministry of Magic.

Percy had a fantastic arc from leaving Hogwarts onward that the movies ignored. Although the movies did redeem Alan Rickman’s unforgettable Severus Snape well, they didnt quite nail other redemption arcs. The movies often seemed like they were teetering on the edge of redeeming Draco Malfoy, but never quite did; meanwhile, they ignored Percy’s exemplary turnaround. Percy snubbed his family’s lack of wealth after leaving Hogwarts but joined them, thankfully, for the Battle of Hogwarts. The movies left all this out, but the TV show, at least, could show it.

3

Regulus Black

Featured In Books Five To Seven

Close

Along with Phineas Nigellus, Regulus was another member of the Black family that the Potterverse movies could have done lots more with. The mysterious R.A.B. referred to throughout the Harry Potter books was only fleetingly included on the page, but Regulus’ signifiance was far-reaching. Regulus Black was Slytherin’s unsung hero in Harry Potter, joining Snape in the pantheon of Slytherin legends.

Despite indoctrination from the Voldemort-adhering Black family, Regulus cast off these intellectual shackles to eventually follow in the footsteps of his brother, Sirius, in opposing Voldemort. Regulus tried to destroy Salazar Slytherin’s locket once he realized how toxic Voldemort’s regime was, and died in the effort. The cliffhanger at the end of book six made Regulus extremely memorable, and the TV show should bring this to the forefront.

2

Peeves

Featured In Books One To Seven

Close

Peeves the Poltergeist was a phenomenal addition to the Harry Potter books, which was what made it so confusing that he was left out of the movies. Along with Nearly Headless Nick, Peeves was probably the best ghost of the story. This infuriating wretch was a permanent nuisance, but never a real danger. And, he eventually made his way into Hogwarts’ good books, unbelievably, providing one of the books’ best twists.

Eternally inclined to wreak havoc on someone, Peeves was persuaded to menace the Death Eaters in the Battle of Hogwarts. Originally touted by be played by the English comedidan Rik Myall, Peeves nearly appeared in the movies, but was disappointingly cut. Robert Sheehan would make a perfect Peeves for Harry Potter on HBO. This spot-on fancast may just help Peeves get the representation he dseserves.

Charlie Weasley

Featured In Books Five And Seven

The Weasley family in Egypt in Harry Potter.

There were quite a few underused Weasleys in Harry Potter, with Bill not the least of them, but Charlie Weasley may have been the most unexplored. Charlie never ended up appearing in the Harry Potter movies, despite his fascinating dragon-taming abilities. This would be an epic inclusion in the TV show, especially if the TV show wants to reel in Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon viewers. Charlie was key in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, so it’s important to include him regardless.

Despite being mentioned numerous times in the movies, Charlie was never featured. This was hugely disappointing given the strong casting of the rest of the Weasleys. Charlie met Harry before the Triwizard Tournament and went on to supply the dragons for it. Not just that, but he was a member of the Order of the Phoenix. All said and done, Charlie’s exclusion from the Harry Potter movies was baffling.
