Claire Danes’ 10 Best Movies And TV Shows

With an interest in dance and acting from an early age, Claire Danes started acting in student films by the time she was 13 years old and broke into the industry with some of her best movies and TV shows as a teenager. She got her start thanks to a handful of roles in her native New York before making the move to California, which paid off since it gave her the big breaks of the 1994 adaptation of Little Women and the now cult-classic My So-Called Life.

Danes is the rare actor who did not have to break into film from television or vice versa. She started out in both mediums and has even appeared on the stage as an adult. Danes has been selective with her roles, giving her a diverse group of characters that makes her talent as a dramatic actress very clear to anyone who has been following her career for over 30 years.

Based on a 2019 novel, Fleishman Is In Trouble is a TV miniseries. While the bulk of the story is centered on Jesse Eisenberg’s character, Danes plays his ex-wife.

Eisenberg’s character reconnects with a pair of his college friends after he and his wife divorce. He begins to enjoy the single life, but he is surprised when his wife disappears and leaves their two children with him. As it turns out, she has a breakdown after a visit to a wellness retreat and ends up hallucinating for days after taking what she thinks is a relaxing edible.

While Danes is only seen in bits and pieces for most of the miniseries, her best work comes when Rachel’s full story is revealed in episode seven, “Me-Time.” While all of the series has been from Eisenberg’s point of view up to that point, Danes’ episode gets to demonstrate the other side of the story and the circumstances she has been in. Danes owns the episode.

Danes was nominated for an Emmy, Critics’ Choice, and Golden Globe Award for her role.

The Hours builds its three narratives around the world of acclaimed writer Virginia Woolf. It’s actors Meryl Streep, Julianne Moore, and Nicole Kidman who are the stars of the story, which is why, though The Hours might be one of Danes’ best movies, it does not rank at the top. The Hours is one of many supporting roles in Danes’ career.

Even though she’s a supporting player here as the daughter of Meryl Streep, Danes is able to bring a certain amount of weight to the role. Her character might not get the spotlight, but she still shines and holds her own against Streep in their scenes. That is no small feat as Meryl Streep is one of the, if not the best, actor of her generation.

Though the film is often seen as depressing by some of its audience, it is also a beautifully interconnected story of three women across different generations.

The Hours was nominated for nine Oscars, winning one.

Orson Welles is known as one of the best filmmakers of the early Hollywood film industry. A writer and director known for his very specific visions, he was also known to be difficult to work with. Me and Orson Welles takes a look at his career in the 1930s, but not from his own perspective. Instead, it makes a young actor who works with Welles (played by Zac Efron), the point of view character. The movie is able to provide a look at how much Welle’s creativity is admired, but also how his abrasive personality could put his fellow creatives off.

Danes appears in the movie as the leading lady in the project they are all involved in. She is in the middle of a love triangle as both of the men find themselves charmed and drawn to her. Danes is able to make the audience love her as well. She has just the right amount of charisma and strength to set her character apart and still bring the movie’s romance to life.

The Rainmaker is inspired by the John Grisham novel of the same name. So many of Grisham’s most famous novels have been adapted for the screen, and it can be hard to stand out among a sea of legal thrillers, but The Rainmaker manages to.

The story follows a young lawyer with no prospects who takes on a job bartending before becoming an associate of an “ambulance chaser” to start working in the legal field. When the lawyer abandons his practice due to an FBI investigation, the young lawyer takes on the case of a leukemia patient denied a bone marrow transplant that could save his life by an insurance company.

Danes does not feature as one of the lawyers in the movie. She plays the love interest to Matt Damon’s main character. Damon could have played the role as one-note, a man determined to find a solution with big arguments in a courtroom. Instead, with the additional emotional weight of Danes’ character in the movie, there is just as much hopeful heart as there is tragedy. Danes infuses the movie with that heart.

My So-Called Life might not have lasted long on television, but it has a lasting legacy for TV fans – especially those of teen TV. The series is widely recognized as one of the best teen shows of all time. It also marks one of Claire Danes’ earliest roles. She had only appeared in a handful of television shows before booking the lead role in the series.

My So-Called Life follows Angela and her feelings for the school bad boy as she comes of age alongside her friends in high school. It is known for its frank and realistic portrayal of ’90s teens. Of course, because the series only lasted one season, some of those coming-of-age stories were cut short.

The series was critically praised at the time and launched the careers of Danes, Jared Leto, and Wilson Cruz. Danes also earned a Golden Globe Award for the role, her first.

There have been many adaptations of Little Women over the years. The Louisa May Alcott novel is so beloved that it seems like every generation gets their own on-screen version of the story. This version sees Claire Danes as one of the March sisters alongside Wynonna Rider, Kirsten Dunst, and Trini Alvarado.

The story follows the March sisters as they grow up in the mid-19th century. They fall in love, follow their dreams, and learn what it means to grieve.

As Beth, Danes is the most softspoken of the March sisters. This is one of her most understated roles as the rest of the March girls are more energetic and, arguably, take up more space in the story. Danes, however, plays the most tragic character in the story, and the audience has to love her before they lose her. In her debut film role, Danes captured the hearts of audiences everywhere with her performance as the sweetest March sister.

Little Women was nominated for three Oscars.

This Temple Grandin biopic was inspired by the memoirs of the woman herself. Grandin, who has been diagnosed as on the autism spectrum, grew up misunderstood, but deeply concerned with the welfare of animals. She became a pioneering voice in the humane treatment of animals on cattle ranches and even in slaughterhouses.

While biopics can go the route of being overly sentimental in order to draw the audience in, Temple Grandin did not do that, and that is part of why it was so critically lauded at the time. The movie stood out because every aspect of it was meticulously planned and executed right down to having Grandin involved in the filmmaking process.

Temple Grandin is the role for which Danes received the most critical praise and award show accolades. It is her only project to have a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes from critics. Despite all of that, her performances in other projects are even more electric.

Temple Grandin was nominated for 14 Emmys, winning seven.

By the time Danes was in this William Shakespeare adaptation, she had appeared in several teen roles. She had already appeared in a few classic adaptations as well. Romeo + Juliet took big risks with its adaptation, though, and they paid off. It’s one of the most memorable Shakespeare adaptations of all time.

The movie brings the classic tragic love story and cautionary tale into the 1990s. Swords are replaced with guns, and rival families are replaced by warring gangs. Shakespeare’s dialogue, however, remains, which is part of why it stands out. The words are brought to life in rich detail thanks to Danes, Leonardo DiCaprio, Harold Perrineau, and more.

Danes is perfect in the role of Juliet. She is the perfect blend of a naive girl and a woman falling in love for the first time. Danes captures the charm of Juliet and has fantastic chemistry with DiCaprio, making this movie one of her first real star-turns.

Of course, Danes did not just have some star-turns in her career. She also got to play a literal star. Inspired by the original story by Neil Gaiman, Stardust is both a love story and the tale of a star that falls to Earth in a fantastical land.

Stardust follows a young man (Charlie Cox) who lives in the village of Wall, so named because a wall runs through the property that separates two worlds. On one side, stars become dust when they fall to Earth. On the other, they shine and live just like people, and witches hunt them for their hearts. He journeys beyond the wall to find a star for the woman he thinks he loves, only to end up in the middle of the adventure of his life.

Stardust is one of those rare adaptations in which the movie surpasses the source material. Not only is the film gorgeously shot, but the world is completely immersive. The smallest bits of magic make perfect sense and feel fully realized. So do the characters, like Yvaine, the falling star. Yvaine feels everything sharply, even painfully, making her anger boil hotter and her love all-consuming. Danes gets to play her emotions big and loud, which is not the case in many of her best-known roles, and she leaps off the screen in the role. While it might not be the role that earned her the most award show recognition, it is her best.

Homeland is the most lauded project for Danes.

Espionage thrillers can be fun to watch, but not all audience members love to see two countries pitted against one another. Here, the story is more about the state of mind of the people involved in the work instead of the larger implications of it.

The story follows Danes as her character initially works as a CIA operative. She becomes convinced in the first season that a rescued military man who has been in captivity for nearly a decade has been “turned” by an enemy nation. The story all spirals out from there as she deals with hiding her bipolar disorder from her colleagues and eventually working as a private citizen for security companies.

Danes’ role in Homeland is very different from anything else she has done – and it is her longest-running television role. She played Carrie Mathison for eight seasons in tense action stories that are far from the romances and period dramas she had been known for in her career. She proved herself capable of much more versatility in her roles than others might have initially believed.

Homeland is the most lauded project for Danes. She earned five Emmy nominations between 2012 and 2016 for the role, winning twice. She also earned three Golden Globe nominations, winning twice. Danes also won a Screen Actors Guild Award, a Critics Choice Award, and three Satellite Awards for her role in the series. Homeland is undoubtedly Claire Danes’ best work on television.
