While Callum Turner’s first lead role in an American movie was not a smash success with critics or audiences, it did help prove he was a young actor who could carry a movie. The Only Living Boy in New York stars Turner as Thomas Webb, an aimless college dropout who returns to live with his parents in New York City. When he discovers that his father (Pierce Brosnan) is having an affair with a woman (Kate Beckinsale), he seeks to learn more about her, eventually engaging in an affair with her as well.

The coming-of-age drama provides Turner with an interesting and complex protagonist to show off his talents. He also holds his own on screen with some more established actors, including memorable scenes opposite Oscar winner Jeff Bridges. While the movie itself is a bit messy in its storytelling and doesn’t offer much with its third-act twists, Turner makes for a solid leading man.

Callum Turner starred alongside other young talents like Shailene Woodley and Joe Alwyn in the period romance drama The Last Letter from Your Lover. Based on the book by Jojo Moyes, the movie begins with a modern journalist (Felicity Jones) discovering a letter between two lovers in 1965. The movie then travels back in time to explore the story behind this passionate affair between writer Anthony (Turner) and married socialite Jennifer (Woodley).

The Last Letter from Your Lover also sets itself apart by telling two romance stories at once…

Turner makes for a compelling romantic lead, sharing powerful chemistry with Woodley, elevating the more familiar aspects of the love story. The Last Letter from Your Lover also sets itself apart by telling two romance stories at once, as Jones’ character finds her own connection while exploring Anthony and Jennifer’s story. While the dual storylines have a somewhat mixed result, the acting helps to keep the audience engaged.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald (2018)

As Theseus Scamander

While Callum Turner hasn’t found himself in too many big Hollywood blockbusters, he did join the Fantastic Beasts franchise in a standout role. Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald was the second movie in the prequel Harry Potter series that follows the adventures of Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) as he deals with the magical forces that threaten the order of the world. The second movie expands the mythology with Johnny Depp’s villainous Grindelwald taking a central role, Jude Law debuting as young Dumbledore, and Turner joining the adventure as Newt’s brother Theseus Scamander.

Turner is one of the highlights of the movie as the more confident and heroic of the Scamander brothers. His chemistry with Redmayne and the differences in their personalities make for some memorable moments. While the Fantastic Beasts movies never caught on like the Harry Potter franchise did, this sequel is a fun return to the Wizarding World. Turner reprised his role as Theseus in the third movie, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore.

Turner found his first major movie role as the lead in the war drama Queen & Country. The movie comes from legendary director John Boorman (Deliverance) and serves as a sequel to his 1987 war drama Hope and Glory, taking place years after and following the same characters in a story centered around the Korean War rather than World War II. Turner leads the movie as Bill Rohan, a young officer who is selected to stay behind as a clerk and follows his story of friendship and first love.

Turner immediately shows a movie star element to his performance, playing the charming romantic lead, showing a sense of humor, and commanding the screen in some powerful moments. It is a unique coming-of-age tale set against the backdrop of a historical moment. The movie also features performances from other rising stars, including Vanessa Kirby as Bill’s adventurous sister.

The first season of the show centered on the murder trial of Lance Corporal Shaun Emery (Turner), a former soldier acquitted of war crimes, only to find himself in a new dilemma.

The first season offers a gripping conspiracy thriller with Turner’s performance as one of the key elements of the story. As the professed innocent man, the audience is able to sympathize with him while also questioning what truth he might be concealing. While Turner did not return for The Capture season 2, his performance as Emery earned him a nomination for the British Academy Television Award for Best Actor.

Green Room is an overlooked horror movie from the 2010s that has continued to grow a cult following over the years while also serving as one of Callum Turner’s best early performances. The movie centers around a punk rock band who reluctantly takes a gig playing at a compound for a neo-Nazi organization. However, when they witness something they were not supposed to see, the group finds themselves trapped with the danger closing in around them.

Turner makes an impact in the role of Tiger, the band’s singer, bringing an authentic sense of terror while also showing compassion for his friends. The movie is a simple yet brutal thriller from filmmaker Jeremy Saulnier (Rebel Ridge), presenting the violence in a disturbingly matter-of-fact way. The film is also notable for featuring a chilling villainous performance from Patrick Stewart as the neo-Nazi leader.
