Nina Sayers is a talented but mentally fragile dancer at a famous New York ballet company. She finally lands the lead role of White Swan/Black Swan in “Swan Lake,” but she becomes increasingly paranoid as a charming new dancer named Lily tries to replace her.
As opening night approaches, Nina begins to experience vivid hallucinations and delusions. Her overbearing mother pressures her to be perfect, while the company’s overbearing directors make unwanted sexual advances towards her. One night after taking ecstasy, Nina has a sexual encounter with Lily, further shattering her tenuous grip on reality.
On opening night, Nina had a complete meltdown backstage. In a delusional state, she stabbed her own reflection to death, believing she had killed Lily. But the stabbing was real and Nina was fatally wounded before taking the stage. Bleeding from the inside, Nina wowed the audience as she performed her life as the Black Swan. Later, as she lay dying, Nina told her director that she finally felt perfect. The screen faded out as her life faded away, leaving only thunderous applause.
