Batman (1989 film)
“Batman” is a 1989 film about the superhero of the same name. It is based on the DC Comics character and was created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger. Directed by Tim Burton, the film is the first in a series of Batman films produced by Warner Bros.
The film stars Jack Nicholson, Michael Keaton, Kim Basinger, Robert Uhl and other actors. It tells the story of Batman’s early days fighting crime and competing with his enemy the Joker.
Before Tim Burton became director in 1986, there were different ideas for the film. The first script was written by Sam Hamm. The film was greenlit after the success of another Tim Burton film, Beetlejuice in 1988. The tone and creativity of the film were influenced by comic books such as The Killing Joke and The Dark Knight Returns.
The story focuses on the origins of the Joker, with Batman inadvertently turning a gangster named Jack Napier into the Insane Clown. “Batman” creator Bob Kane also provided help on the film.

Before Michael Keaton landed the role of Batman, many other actors were considered. Some were unsure whether Keaton, known for his comedies, could take on a serious role. Jack Nicholson agreed to play the Joker, but had special conditions for his role.
Filmed at Pinewood Studios from October 1988 to January 1989. The budget increased from $30 million to $48 million. The script was changed due to a writers’ strike.
“Batman” was a huge success, grossing over $400 million at the box office. People loved Jack Nicholson and Michael Keaton’s performances, Tim Burton’s direction, the film’s design, and Danny Elfman’s music. At the time, it was one of the highest-grossing movies of all time. The film was nominated for awards and won an Academy Award for its art direction. It also spawned a popular animated TV series and influenced the way superhero movies are made today.
After Batman, three more films were released: Batman Returns (1992), again starring Tim Burton and Michael Keaton; Batman Forever (1995), starring Val Kilmer as Batman; and Batman & Robin (1997) starring George Clooney.
