Baldur’s Gate 3 Development
Baldur’s Gate was originally created as a collaboration between BioWare and Black Isle Studios, and published by Interplay Entertainment in 1998. The game is based on the licensed Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) ruleset, specifically the Forgotten Realms realm.
This victory spawned the sequel Baldur’s Gate II: Shadows of Amn and its accompanying expansion pack, Icewind Dale and its successor, and Planescape: Torment. Another sequel, Baldur’s Gate III: Black Hound, was launched by Black Isle Studios in 2003, but was put on hold due to Interplay’s financial crisis, which led to the studio’s closure.

The license for the D&D video games was transferred to Atari in 2008, leading to the release of Neverwinter Nights and its sequel Neverwinter Nights 2. Wizards of the Coast, which now owns the D&D series, has begun updating the core ruleset. In contrast, Larian Studios’ new Baldur’s Gate sequel has nothing to do with the scrapped Baldur’s Gate III: Blackhound.
The rights to the show have attracted interest from numerous developers, including inXile Entertainment’s Brian Fargo and Obsidian Entertainment’s Feargus Urquhart, who have been pursuing the IP for more than a decade. Larian Studios approached Wizards of the Coast after the release of Divinity: Original Sin in 2014, but initially dismissed Larian as they were new to the game. The pre-release materials for Divinity: Original Sin II impressed Wizards of the Coast, sparking renewed interest in the development of Baldur’s Gate 3.
Baldur’s Gate 3 is based on the fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons rules, with some adjustments made to enhance its suitability as a video game. Some notable adjustments, such as a more player-friendly combat system, have been made to ensure an enjoyable experience.
Larian Studios’ trailer released ahead of E3 2019 further fueled anticipation for Baldur’s Gate 3, which was officially released during the Google Stadia demo. The tabletop adventure game Baldur’s Gate: Fall into Avernus was its predecessor, and Baldur’s Gate 3’s storyline follows the events of that module. Larian Studios has announced that the game will be released on macOS on October 5, 2020, and will also be released on Windows and Stadia.
“Baldur’s Gate III” was originally scheduled to be released in Early Access on September 30, 2020, but was later postponed to October 6, 2020. Early Access includes the first act of gameplay, approximately 25 hours of content, and a portion of the world map. Other elements, including multiplayer features and classes, will be gradually introduced through patches during Early Access, leading to the full release in August 2023. After Stadia shut down, the Stadia version was abandoned.
The full version is scheduled for release on August 31, 2023 for macOS, Windows, and PlayStation 5, with the PC version adjusted to August 3, and macOS and PlayStation 5 adjusted to September 6. Larian Studios acknowledged that development of the Xbox Series X/S port will face challenges, which may result in a delay to 2024 due to Series S limitations and Series X affordability requirements.
