Avengers: Secret Wars Is Inspired By 2 Major Marvel Comics, & Here Are The 8 Best Moments From Them We Need To See In The MCU

Marvel Studios has the perfect opportunity to adapt some of Marvel Comics’ biggest events for the MCU after the Russo brothers’ new reveal about Avengers: Secret Wars. Directing duo the Russo brothers were confirmed to be returning to Marvel to helm Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars in 2024, after previously directing MCU projects The Winter Soldier, Civil War, Infinity War and Endgame. The Russos have routinely expressed their admiration for the Secret Wars events in Marvel Comics, which has spurred their new comments about the inspiration behind their upcoming MCU movies.

During a recent conversation with TechRadar, the Russo brothers confirmed that, while they will surely be creating their “own version of the story,” both the 1984 and 2015 Secret Wars events from Marvel Comics will inspire the narrative of Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars, though the latter most of all. Marvel Comics’ Secret Wars from 1984 and 2015 inspiring the Russo brothers means some of these stories’ biggest events may be adapted for live-action. This includes some moments that could change the landscape of the MCU for good.

Well, we always create our own version of the story, so, we use the comics as loose inspiration. But, you know, I grew up on the original run. That’s something that got me into Marvel comic books. The Hickman run is also fantastic [and they’re] very different from each other in a lot of ways, so we’ll draw inspiration from both of them.

Spider-Man Gets His Black Venom Costume

Spider-Man Received His Black Costume In 1984’s Secret Wars

Close

The rivalry between Spider-Man and Venom has become one of the most notable and beloved in Marvel’s history, and it started all the way back in 1984’s Secret Wars event. Brought to Battleworld by the Beyonder along with other heroes and a plethora of villains, Spider-Man goes through a huge change during Secret Wars when he finds and wears his black costume for the first time. This costume grants him enhanced abilities, so he takes it back to New York, where it reveals itself to be a symbiotic alien that becomes Venom after bonding with Eddie Brock.

Ever since Tom Hardy debuted as Eddie Brock’s Venom in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, and more so after he made a cameo appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home’s post-credits scene, there have been theories suggesting Tom Holland’s Peter Parker will bond with and eventually battle the Symbiote. A piece of Venom was left in the MCU after No Way Home, perfectly setting the stage for Spider-Man to get his black alien costume. If this happens in Avengers: Doomsday, Spider-Man 4 and Avengers: Secret Wars would be the perfect places to adapt Marvel Comics’ Alien Costume Saga.

Doctor Doom Removes Thanos’ Spine

Doctor Doom Removed Thanos’ Spine In 2015’s Secret Wars

Close

2015’s version of Secret Wars by Jonathan Hickman was a more cohesive, expansive and game-changing version of the iconic storyline, taking place after incursion events destroy the multiverse and Doctor Doom uses the Beyonders’ power to build Battleworld from fragmented universes. Doom sets himself up as God Emperor, while the variants saved on Battleworld don’t remember their lives before, allowing Doom’s reign to go unchecked. The arrival of characters who do remember, however, such as Reed Richards and the Cabal, including Thanos, marks the beginning of the end of Doom’s reign.

You know, I hear kind of like through the grapevine, that they’re gonna bring him back. And there’s the What If…? series and that’s a different kind of Thanos and all that. But I don’t know in the Marvel world whether they’re going to bring him back, but I didn’t know that he was the most killed-off Marvel villain… You learn something new every day.

While the members of the Cabal put up a fight against the Thor Corps, God Emperor Doom’s police force comprising Thor variants, Doom’s arrival marks the swift end of this fight. In a notable scene, Doom removes the spine from Thanos’ body, swiftly proving his strength as he’s able to easily dispatch one of Marvel’s most iconic villains. Josh Brolin teased his return as Thanos in the MCU to ComicBook in 2024, so it’s very possible that the Russo brothers could include this memorable and gruesome Secret Wars moment in the live-action adaptation.

Black Panther Reboots The Universe With An Infinity Gauntlet

Black Panther Wielded The Infinity Gauntlet In 2015’s Secret Wars

Close

The Infinity Gauntlet was a key aspect of the MCU’s Infinity Saga, but the glove hasn’t been seen or mentioned since 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. Despite this, the Infinity Gauntlet could become important again in Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars, just as it is in the 2015 Secret Wars event from Marvel Comics. The Black Panther acquires a completed Infinity Gauntlet while on Battleworld in Secret Wars, uses this to distract God Emperor Doom long enough for Reed Richards to defeat the villain, and then uses it to restore the universe.

Shuri became the MCU’s Black Panther following T’Challa’s death in Wakanda Forever. There have, however, recently been reports that T’Challa may be recast in the MCU, with someone new taking over the role from the late Chadwick Boseman.

The Black Panther doesn’t put the universe back exactly the way it was, however, as he establishes a new continuity for Marvel Comics by combining the 616 and 1610 universes. It’s been theorized that Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Secret Wars could culminate in a soft-reboot for the MCU, bringing mutants and the X-Men fully into the MCU’s timeline. Having Shuri’s Black Panther or a variant of T’Challa use an Infinty Gauntlet to restore the universe in Secret Wars would be a fantastic way to make this happen, paying homage to the 2015 storyline.

Groot Emerges From A Simple Toothpick

Groot Grew To An Incredible Size In 2015’s Secret Wars

Close

In recent weeks, Chris Pratt has promised his return to the MCU as Peter Quill’s Star-Lord, and the most likely place for him to return is in Phase 6’s Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars. This means that Pratt’s Star-Lord could explore some of the character’s best Secret Wars moments from Marvel Comics’ 2015 event, including one that could see a new version of Groot emerge in the MCU. In Secret Wars #8, Star-Lord stabs a toothpick made from Groot’s body into Yggdrasil on Battleworld, which allows a giant Groot to burst from the wood.

Since he debuted in 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy, Groot has taken many different forms as audiences have watched him grow over almost ten years.

Yggdrasil formed God Emperor Doom’s throne on Battleworld in Secret Wars, so it was a huge mark of progress for the heroes of the event to see Doom’s throne and his entire castle brought down with the massive expansion of Groot. Since Yggdrasil in the MCU has taken the form of the entire multiverse, with Tom Hiddleston’s Loki at the center, this scene could be adapted into an even more vibrant, cinematic spectacle. Groot’s future in the MCU is uncertain after Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, so it would be great to see him return alongside his friend, Star-Lord.

The Hulk Holds Up A Mountain

Bruce Banner Saved Other Heroes From A Falling Mountain In 1984’s Secret Wars

Close

In one of the most iconic moments of the original Secret Wars event, Molecule Man has a surefire way to kill all the heroes in one fell swoop: drop a mountain on them. It first seems as though heroes such as Spider-Man, Iron Man, Captain America, Mister Fantastic and She-Hulk, among others, were killed beneath the mountain, but it was later revealed that Bruce Banner’s Hulk had actually caught the falling rock. Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk has been the subject of criticism in the MCU, with some expressing concerns that he’s been “nerfed,” but adapting this scene would prove otherwise.

Marvel suggested this falling mountain weighed over 150 billion tons, perhaps marking the most impressive display of sheer strength by the Hulk in his entire history. Seeing Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk hold up a mountain range to save his friends, while the others work out how to escape, would be fantastic for the MCU. This could bring the Hulk’s power and strength in the MCU back to the forefront, and this could call back to the now-iconic moment from Avengers: Endgame that saw the Hulk holding up pieces of Avengers HQ while Rhodey and Rocket got free.

Sheriff Strange Betrays Doctor Doom & Pays The Price

Doctor Strange Was Killed By Doctor Doom In 2015’s Secret Wars

Close

Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange is a key player in the MCU’s Multiverse Saga, so it’s very likely he’ll be crucial to the narrative of Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars. This could mark his debut as Sheriff Strange, a version of the character who becomes God Emperor Doom’s right-hand-man in 2015’s Secret Wars event. Strange isn’t completely loyal to Doom, however, as he goes behind his God Emperor’s back to help the survivors who arrive on Battleworld in the life raft, eventually culminating in Doom’s defeat and Battleworld’s destruction.

A number of recent MCU projects have teased Doctor Strange as a formidable villain in the Multiverse Saga, and seeing him as Sheriff Strange in Avengers: Secret Wars would complete this transition. However, he could become a hero again by betraying Doctor Doom, even if this leads to this variant’s death, adapting the iconic moment from Marvel Comics in which Doom dispatches Strange for his insubordination. Benedict Cumberbatch’s return to the MCU has been all but confirmed, and it would be great to explore this complex storyline when he does come back.

Doctor Doom Takes Galactus’ Power To Battle The Beyonder

Doctor Doom Battled The Beyonder In 1984’s Secret Wars (& The Beyonders In 2015)

Close

Doctor Doom wasn’t only a major player in the 2015 Secret Wars storyline, but he was also pivotal to the original 1984 event, too. In the original storyline, Doctor Doom creates a machine that uses Klaw’s body – Andy Serkis’ Ulysses Klaue in the MCU – to absorb the powers of Galactus. This makes Doom strong enough to take on the enigmatic Beyonder, who initially brought Marvel’s heroes and villains to Battleworld to fight each other. Doom absorbed the Beyonder’s power, but his reign of terror didn’t last long – certainly not as long as in 2015’s Secret Wars.

Doctor Doom has replaced Kang the Conqueror as the primary antagonist of Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars.

Robert Downey Jr. is set to debut as Doctor Doom in the MCU in Avengers: Doomsday, which gives Marvel Studios and the Russo brothers the opportunity to adapt this epic event from Secret Wars and explore Doom’s evolution into God Emperor. Additionally, Ralph Ineson will be making his first appearance as planet-eater Galactus in The Fantastic Four: First Steps, which means this scene could be perfectly set up for the MCU’s Phase 6. Seeing Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom take Galactus’ abilities and become all-powerful would be incredible in the MCU.

Incursions Ravage Marvel’s Multiverse

Incursions Destroy The Multiverse In 2015’s Secret Wars

Close

Marvel Studios has perfectly laid the foundations for incursions to ravage the cosmos in Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars, with 2022’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness even referencing incursions directly. John Krasinski’s Reed Richards described incursions, setting up the biggest event from 2015’s Secret Wars event to be adapted spectacularly into the MCU. It makes the most amount of sense that the Multiverse Saga would end with incursions destroying the multiverse and bringing all manner of variants together on Battleworld, which supports another wild MCU theory.

Earth-838’s Reed Richards: “Stephen, your arrival here confuses and destabilizes reality. The larger the footprint you leave behind, the greater the risk of incursion… An Incursion occurs when the boundary between two universes erodes and they collide, destroying one or both entirely.”

It would be practically impossible, and cause huge controversy, if the Russo brothers adapted Marvel Comics’ Secret Wars event without exploring the impact of incursions on the MCU. Since this culminated in the establishment of a new continuity in Marvel Comics, this could also take place in the MCU, supporting the idea of a soft-reboot. Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars promise to be two of the biggest, most action-packed and most character-filled movies the MCU has ever seen, which is very exciting for the Multiverse Saga’s conclusion.
