Athena movie ending explained
In Athena’s intricate narrative, the story follows multiple characters’ perspectives on and processing of current situations. When the brothers come together, their different approaches and ideologies lead to conflict within the group. Karim is a rebellious character who tries to confront the police by arresting one of them. He intends to trade the officer for justice and point the finger at the police officers responsible for the death of his brother Idil.
Meanwhile, another brother, Abdul, finds himself hunted by the mob and seeks the protection of Mokhtar, who is holed up in Athena Manor. Each brother proposes a different course of action to escape their predicament and seek retribution for Idil’s murder. Mokhtar believed that killing captured police officers would send a powerful message to their opponents. Abdul, by contrast, suggested offering the officer a sign of surrender in the hope of gaining pardon and aiding his own escape.
Tragedy strikes when Karim is killed, and Mokhtar proposes that they escape together. Overwhelmed with anger and frustrated by his brother’s apparent lack of empathy, Abdul violently confronts Mokhtar and eventually allies himself with the rebels, switching sides. In his frantic pursuit of justice, Abdul interrogates the police and anyone he can reach, and becomes consumed by his pursuit.
In the film’s climax, director Romain Gavras glimpses the events leading up to Idil’s initial abuse. Idil was brutally beaten and left for dead while the perpetrators stripped off their police uniforms and watched as flames engulfed the evidence. Interestingly, the men have the mark of a cross within a circle around their necks, suggesting a deeper level to the story involving religious beliefs.
The exploration of personal faith, the impact of violence, and the pursuit of justice elevate “Athena” beyond a mere action-driven narrative. Romain Gavras deftly weaves these elements together, delving into the complexities of each character’s motivations and the consequences of their choices. By unraveling the mystery behind Idil’s fate, the film transcends a simple revenge story and transforms into a profound exploration of themes that resonate deeply with audiences.

Athena movie plot
Abdel, a soldier of Algerian-French origin whose 13-year-old brother Idil died allegedly at the hands of three police officers, spoke at a news conference outside a police station. Seeking justice, a group of young men led by Abdul’s brother Karim disrupted a press conference, incited violence and stole weapons and police cars. They retreated to their neighborhood, Athena, barricading themselves and the residents of the residential area.

In response, riot police, known as the CRS, were deployed to suppress the uprising, but youths retaliated by launching fireworks and other makeshift projectiles. Amid the chaos, a drug dealer named Moktar attempts to smuggle contraband out of Athena, only to find himself trapped in a hookah lounge where he has hidden his illegal items.
Abdul returns to Athena to attend Idir’s memorial service and tries to get in touch with Karim, but the situation escalates and he focuses on organizing the evacuation and shelter of Athena’s residents. While leading a group of residents past riot police, clashes broke out, leading to the arrests of Abdul and others from Athena.
As night fell, riot police advanced into residential areas. However, they encountered fierce resistance, causing them to retreat. In the chaos, young officer Jerome becomes separated from his troops and is captured by the young men. They sent Jerome’s video as a way to pressure police to reveal the identities of the three officers involved in the beating of Idir.
Abdul was released by the on-site police commander and sneaked back to Athena. There, he confronts Karim about the violence, but their discussion is interrupted when they are chased by young men. Seeking refuge, Abdul and Karim take refuge in a hookah lounge, where they meet Mokhtar, revealing their unexpected connection as half-brothers.
Mokhtar contacted the corrupt police officers who were under his influence and they agreed to rescue Jerome. Karim confronted Abdul while other young men tried to break into the hookah lounge. The situation escalates until corrupt officials arrive, leading to Karim’s death.
In a rage, Abdul beat Mokhtar viciously and captured Jerome. He communicated with the police commander, reiterated the request for the names of the police officers, and instructed Sebastian, a former terrorist who was holed up in the Athena day care center, to assist the young people. However, the police commander told Abdul that the people in the video were not real police officers and warned him that tactical units were on the way.
During a video call with his commander, Abdul aimed his gun at Jerome and fired twice, but deliberately missed. Abdel was overwhelmed by his emotions and made no attempt to stop Jerome from leaving the building. As the tactical team closes in, Sebastian detonates a makeshift bomb, destroying the building and killing Abdul.
In the final scene, a man in a van records Idir’s beating and later shares it on social media. It was revealed that the attacker posing as a police officer was actually a far-right agitator. They burned their camouflage clothing in the woods, suggesting the beating was a deliberate act intended to incite race unrest.
