Films that center on modern technology of the time tend to age quite substantially and quickly at that. The computer processes that are showcased and amped up in Hackers may seem extremely dated, and bordering on jibberish, but it’s for this precise reason that it is such an entertaining film to watch nowadays.

Like similar movies that focus on the dangers of technology, it is meant to make the “good old days” seem like an idyllic time, devoid of online perils. Angelina Jolie is one of the slick hackers that the prodigious main character encounters and brings an untamed edge that highlights how much of an ingénue she was.

Changeling (2008)

As Christine Collins

Close

The topic of this powerful crime drama is rather difficult and highlights a time when women’s rights were so limited, and it was incredibly easy to vilify mothers and take away what little power they had. In Changeling, Jolie plays a mother whose son is abducted and replaced with a different child, but nobody seems to believe her, labeling her mentally unstable and an unfit parent.

Jolie plays the character with strength and determination and even earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress in a Leading Role.

As she tries to take on a corrupt and unjust system, she must face a society that systematically discredits people who did not conform as they should. The story is gripping and allows viewers to grow as frustrated as the heroine does while she tries to make it right and get her actual son back.

Maleficent (2014)

As Maleficent

Close

Before live-action remakes became cumbersome and unpopular, they offered a welcome reimagining and retelling of well-known stories. Maleficent took the spotlight off of Sleeping Beauty, and instead, focused on the far more interesting and complex antagonist of the beloved fairy tale. Jolie is a revelation as the slighted fairy, who gets much more of a backstory than the ruthless evil queen figure of the animated film it is based on.

Her characterization is exemplary, as her exaggerated features perfectly embody the antagonistic feel of her charge. But, she gets real character development as her motivations are explained, and she even manages to turn over a new leaf, and bond with the child she cursed. Elle Fanning makes a fine Aurora, and the fairy-tale scenery is as magical as can be. The movie managed to pay homage to the source material while bringing in a completely new perspective which has been lost among the many subsequent remakes.

Maria (2024)

As Maria Callas

Close

Jolie bears more than a striking resemblance to the famed and doomed soprano, Maria Callas. While the casting was highly publicized, and was set to mark the star’s return to the spotlight, the film was not a big box office draw. However, Jolie’s performance and dedication to celebrating the complicated woman’s tumultuous life received widespread critical acclaim. The movie has a score of 75% on Rotten Tomatoes, and one percent more on the viewers’ score.

A huge celebrity of her own era, Maria Callas led a fascinating life that took her around the world and connected her to some of the most influential people of the time. She also had an angelic voice that brought her stardom and allowed her to perform in some of the most prestigious venues in the world. While Jolie does not do the majority of the singing, which is completely understandable considering Callas’ range, she delivers the emotion behind each performance extremely well.

There is so much to love about this film and its sequels, as it mixes comedy with some very fun action, and the animation is gorgeous. As Po goes on his hero’s journey, he comes across a host of capable champions and learns the ancient craft of martial arts despite his clumsy nature and cuddly tendencies. With supporting voice actors that include Jackie Chan, Dustin Hoffman, and Lucy Liu, there is something for both older and younger members of the audience.

On paper, Girl, Interrupted was meant to allow Winona Ryder to recapture her leading lady glory days, but Jolie stole the movie with her enigmatic portrayal of a troubled young woman at a mental institution. Set at a time when any sign of difficulty with one’s mental health would warrant institutionalization, young women were grouped together and effectively brainwashed into conformity.

The cast is full of talented, now-huge stars like Brittany Murphy, Clea DuVall, and Elisabeth Moss, and they capture the struggles of being young and different in a time when everybody was encouraged to fit neatly into a particular box. The scenes between the women are powerful, and there are many moments that encourage self-reflection and looking inward. Jolie’s well-deserved Oscar showed that she was someone to be reckoned with, and showcased her range even more. It is a coming-of-age story that has resonated with many generations since its release.

Gia (1998)

As Gia Carangi

Close

In her breakthrough role, Angelina Jolie plays the charismatic supermodel Gia Carangi, who made it big in the world of fashion in the 1970s and 1980s. The model did not fit the mold that saw covers showing the same cookie-cutter looks that defined the era, but once she got her big break, she changed all that. Wild at heart, Gia lived life on the edge, which ultimately led to her tragic end, and she died of AIDS in 1986.

The film follows her rise and fall, and Jolie encapsulates her wild energy perfectly. She has a natural playfulness that shines through and an edge which the famous model was known for. Her performance was widely praised, and she was nominated for a Primetime Emmy for this TV movie. This true story is a fascinating one, showing the pitfalls of fame in a highly unregulated and enabling industry.

1

Wanted (2008)

As Fox

Close

Jolie has starred in some of the best action films of the last few decades, and Wanted is arguably the best one on her resume. A secret society of mysterious assassins operates in the shadows and recruits an apathetic man whose father was part of the organization. As he learns the craft, he is trained by Jolie’s Fox, and wise mentor Sloan, played by Morgan Freeman.

She brings depth to what could easily be a one-dimensional role and has an elegant yet deadly energy, making this still one of her best movies to date.

The action is incredible and the scenes of “bending the bullet” are still as thrilling to watch over 15 years later. There are some welcome twists, and James McAvoy goes through a very impressive transformation and his character makes for an unlikely hero who uncovers some dark secrets of the company.
