Alanna Ubach’s 10 Best Movies And TV Shows

Alanna Ubach

got her start in the industry as a teenager, but her best movies and TV shows are largely from her work as an adult. She has a varied career that consists of over 150 credited roles. Among those roles, she has appeared in romantic comedies, musicals, horror movies, many animated projects, and gritty TV dramas. There is no role Alanna Ubach cannot do, but because she is such an accomplished character actor who takes on so many supporting roles, for a lot of movie and TV fans, Ubach will be a vaguely recognizable face they cannot place.

Ubach has appeared in some modern classics, like Legally Blonde and Sister Act 2. She has also lent her voice to a Disney-Pixar tearjerker. These days, most TV audiences, however, will likely recognize her as one of the parents in Euphoria. Ubach has played roles that appeal to any and all audiences, and she knows how to make each and every one of those roles completely different from one another, demonstrating how versatile and talented she truly is as she disappears into them.

Though many of Alanna Ubach’s earlier roles see her playing teens and college students, today, she is better known for playing moms. That’s the case in See Dad Run as well. The Nick at Nite series plays to both kids who are interested in family sitcoms and adults who are going to recognize the actors playing the parents.

The series sees an actor (Scott Baio) become a stay-at-home dad to help raise the kids after he has spent the last decade playing a dad on a family show. His wife (Ubach) is a soap opera actor, so him taking the reins at home, means she can focus more on work. He finds being a real dad and playing one on TV are very different.

See Dad Run plays into a lot of tropes when it comes to family shows, and especially those concerning the husband-wife dynamics. While it is not the best family show of the modern day, it does offer a unique perspective on family sitcoms. It also gives Ubach a chance to show off those sitcom skills, even if the scripts were not always the best.

There is some debate among fans as to whether the first or second Sister Act is the better movie. While, arguably, the first movie is funnier, the second movie has a much more impressive soundtrack and an incredible roster of young talent from the ‘90s.

The movie sees Dolores (Whoopi Goldberg) once again donning a habit as Sister Mary Clarence to help get the kids at a Catholic school in check. She becomes their choir director and infuses her particular knack for making gospel music fun into them. Among those choir kids are Jennifer Love Hewitt, Lauryn Hill, and Alanna Ubach.

Ubach appears as Maria, a young woman who has a hard time in warm-ups with the other kids because she does not know the other songs they do. Dolores does not hold that against her though and allows her to warm up with the theme song from The Love Boat after this iconic speech to the students:

Hey, hey – excuse me! It is NOT Maria’s fault, that she does not know that Mary had a lamb. It is not – and I say this to you – it is not Maria’s fault. Because maybe, MAYBE where Maria came from, Mary had a dog! Or a lil kitty cat! Or a little bald headed brother named Bart! It is NOT her fault and we’re not going to tell her it is, are we? No, we are not!

Ubach’s character is a small part of a hugely talented ensemble, but she makes a lasting impression on the audience with great comedic timing and a small look at her talent.

Clockwatchers is a gem of a ‘90s movie. Though it made the film festival circuit and did eventually get a theatrical release in the US, it’s likely not a movie many have seen today.

Clockwatchers tells the story of four women who work as temps in a credit company. They each have very different personality types, but bond over their boredom at work and their need for their jobs. Their worlds are upended when a fifth woman is hired at the company in a permanent position after a single day of work rather than in a temporary one like theirs. As things start to go missing around the office, their relationships begin to fracture.

Ubach’s Jane is not the standout member of the ensemble. Her character is only working at the temporary job until she marries, and much of the movie’s conflict happens around her rather than with her. Despite that, Ubach carries herself well and holds her own opposite Toni Collette, Parker Posey, and Lisa Kudrow as the other members of the ensemble. With such powerful performers around her, Ubach could have been lost, but she never is.

Bombshell takes a few creative liberties in its approach to a true story. That is not unusual when Hollywood takes on biopics and attempts to streamline stories. In this case, that story is the harassment of women who worked under Fox News executive Robert Ailes and how they slowly came forward about his treatment of them.

Much of the attention for acting in the movie has (rightfully) been paid to Margot Robbie. Robbie’s character, unlike most of the ones in the movie, is not inspired by a single person, but is instead, a composite of several different people who worked for Fox. It allowed the writers to be able to put more details in the story without naming more names, and Robbie’s turn in the movie has received the most praise from critics.

That does not mean the rest of the huge ensemble is not impressive. Ubach appears as Jeanine Pirro, a real-life television host and former district attorney. She’s a small part of that big ensemble, and it takes a lot of skill to not pull focus from the main story of the movie and still turn out a stellar performance, as she does.

Many of Ubach’s earlier roles see her playing very blunt young women, and later, particularly bubbly ones. Susan Bennett is actually a character that is a bit more muted, but it works in a show like Ted where so many of the other characters are right in the faces of the audience.

Ted is a prequel series to the movie of the same name and its sequel. It follows the adventures of the titular talking stuffed bear and the human family he lives with. Here, it’s during the high school days of Ted’s story.

Susan is John’s (Max Burkholder) stay-at-home mother. She is relatively quiet, puts the needs of everyone else first, and is often in a supporting role in the storylines. Susan has a few standout episodes, like her deciding to give teaching another try to see if she missed out by not continuing on that career path. Her character provides a much needed grounding force in the show when everyone else is so much larger-than-life. Ubach’s role as Susan helps hold Ted, John, and the rest of the family together.

…while they are a great portrayal of sisterhood, they are also fantastic comedic relief in the movie.

Legally Blonde does not offer Alanna Ubach her largest role. It does offer her a role in a movie that has become something of a legend for its celebration of femininity. The movie reminds women that they do not have to choose between their ambition and being seen as a woman.

Legally Blonde follows Elle Woods (Reese Witherspoon) as she sets out to prove she can get a law degree and be good enough for the boyfriend who dumped. She is underestimated at every turn, but proves herself more than capable of handling herself in a courtroom.

Ubach plays one of Elle’s best friends and sorority sisters. She is only present at the start and end of the movie. Elle’s friends are there to be her cheerleaders and, while they are a great portrayal of sisterhood, they are also fantastic comedic relief in the movie. Ubach does a fantastic job at making her brief time in the movie stand out, especially when she has the likes of Jennifer Coolidge also making a lasting impression.

Ubach also returned for the sequel Legally Blonde 2: Red, White, And Blonde.

Like most Disney and Pixar movies, Coco seems like a fun animated movies for kids, but it is also one that gives a sweeping emotional storyline for adults. The movie delves into Mexican culture, music, and family dynamics.

Coco follows a young boy named Miguel who longs to make music like his idol. Music, however, is banned among the family. He ends up on a journey through the land of the dead, meeting some of his deceased relatives, and discovers just why music has been taken from his family, and gets it back for them.

Ubach’s Mama Imelda is not one of the living characters in the movie. Instead, she is one of the relatives Miguel meets on his journey, and one that aids him in discovering the truth about his family history. Ubach has become a prolific voice over artist, so it is no surprise that she is perfect as the family matriarch here, providing warmth, but also strength for Miguel as he learns about his family.

Coco was nominated for two Oscars, winning both, as well as 11 Annie Awards, winning nine, and two Golden Globes, winning one.

There have been a lot of Spider-Man adaptations, but this one was canceled prematurely. It aired as part of the WB’s kids’ programming block and ended up being canceled after two seasons (of a planned five) as Disney acquired Marvel.

The series is a fairly straight-forward Spider-Man adaptation as it follows a teenage Peter Parker (voiced by Josh Keaton) as he balances his regular life with his heroic duties. It did make some interesting choices though, pulling from several different comic book continuities in an effort to craft an engaging new series.

Ubach lends her voice to multiple characters in the show, again, showing off her talent as a voice over actor. Her primary role in the series, however, is as Liz Allan, one of Peter’s love interests in the second season. Liz is not often portrayed in screen adaptations of Spider-Man’s stories as Mary Jane Watson and Gwen Stacey are often picked as better-known characters, so this was a fun portrayal for Spider-Man fans long before Spider-Man: Homecoming put the character in the spotlight.

The series is one of two projects Ubach has participated in that currently holds a 100% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. The art, character arcs, and voice work of the actors were all praised during the show’s run, and it’s a shame the audience did not get to see it grow.

…Ubach deserves an Emmy for the role…

Though most fans know Euphoria centers on its teen characters, the parental characters are there in supporting roles to flesh out the home lives of the main cast. Ubach is Cassie’s (Sydney Sweeney) mother.

The series centers on Rue (Zendaya), a teenager suffering under the weight of her addiction and how it affects her life. Stories in the show spin out from her, connecting to her family and friends. That means the parents of the other characters do not have as large of a presence as the teens do, but Ubach’s role is a fantastic one.

Ubach’s Suze is a loving and caring mother. She is there for her kids as much as she can be. She is also often inebriated when she appears on screen. Suze appears, at least in the show so far, to be a functioning alcoholic. She provides a different look at the way addiction can manifest in someone. Ubach plays her flawlessly, making her warmth and feeling apparent while still playing her as teetering on the edge. Many critical outlets, including Collider, maintain that Ubach deserves an Emmy for the role, though she has yet to be nominated.

In Our Blood is the other project Ubach has been a part of that currently holds a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, and makes for Ubach’s best movie to date.

The story follows a young woman who plans to shoot a documentary about her reuniting with her mother. Her mother has had problems with addiction in the past, and the documentary is meant to demonstrate them overcoming that. Her mother, however, goes missing just as they are getting ready to film.

Ubach plays the mother in the storyline. In Our Blood uses a story of addiction and what it can do to someone, and the people around them, and turns it into a horror movie. It’s a masterful weaving of emotional storylines with horror conventions and everyone turns out great performances. It’s one of the most raw performances of Ubach’s career, which is why it is her best. She has already proven time and again that she is an adept character actor, but In Our Blood cements that fact.
