Developed and published by Capcom, the game was originally released for Nintendo 3DS in 2013 and was later released for iOS, Android, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One. The team aims to make a significant impact with this part, focusing on restoring trial systems. They utilize 3D graphics while retaining the look of earlier games and integrating localization into development. Critics praised the audio, visuals, and characters, but others criticized the game for not always accepting logic input during trials. Despite this, it achieved high sales compared to previous games in the series.

In Dual Destinies, players control three defense attorneys: Phoenix Wright, Apollo Justice, and Athena Sykes. Their goal is to solve the case and exonerate their clients.
The game has two main parts: investigation and trial. During the investigation, players search for evidence at crime scenes, talk to witnesses, present evidence and move between locations. Apollo’s “sense” ability helps visually detect lies, while Phoenix’s “mind lock” can reveal hidden truths.
During a trial, players cross-examine witnesses, demand more information and provide evidence to reveal contradictions. Incorrect evidence reduces the judge’s confidence, which can lead to game over. Athena’s “emotion matrix” can detect conflicting emotions in testimony and help uncover the truth. At the end, players use “re-visualization” to deduce and draw conclusions.
Phoenix Wright’s Ace Attorney Dual Destinies Plot
Dual Destinies is set one year after the events of the previous game, Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney. The legal system is in trouble, and false accusations and false evidence are commonplace. Defense attorney Phoenix Wright regains his badge and hires a young attorney with a gift for psychology, Athena Cykes, to join him alongside Apollo Justice of institutions.
Under the supervision of Detective Bobby Fulbright, Phoenix, Apollo and Athena worked on multiple cases. They defended Mayor Damian Tenma, who was accused of murdering Councilman Rex Kyuubi, and revealed that the real murderer was Tenma’s assistant Florent Labelle. Later, Athena defended her friend Juniper Woods, who was accused of murdering her teacher, and revealed that the real culprit was another teacher named Aristotle Means.

After an explosion at the space center, Apollo’s friend Clay Tyran was found dead, and Athena and Apollo protected an astronaut named Solomon Starbuck. During the trial, a bomb explodes, injuring Apollo, but they reveal the real bomber to be bomb squad expert Ted Tonate. Feeling invested, Apollo investigates further, while Phoenix takes on Solomon’s case and proves his innocence. However, new evidence links Athena to Clay’s murder, leading to her arrest.
Phoenix delves into the murder of Athena’s mother seven years ago, leading to Blackquill’s conviction. One day before Blackquill’s execution, his sister takes hostages and demands a retrial. With the help of Miles Edgeworth, Phoenix proves Athena and Blackquill’s innocence and reveals that the true culprit is the Phantom, an international spy posing as a Fulbright. With the team’s help, Phoenix uncovers the Phantom and ends the dark age of the law.
