5 Vampire Rules Sinners Follows (& 3 Rules It Breaks)

Sinners is a film that follows many traditional vampire rules, but some rules regarding the supernatural creatures don’t fit into the story of the movie. Upon its release, reviews for Sinners have been incredible, with Screen Rant’s own Mae Abdulbaki giving it a score of 9 out of 10. The film, which is directed by Ryan Coogler, also has a near-perfect score of 98% on Rotten Tomatoes (via Rotten Tomatoes). These impressive ratings prove that Sinners is one of the best movies of the year so far.

However, even though Sinners is about a cult of vampires terrorizing a group of people in a small Mississippi town in 1932, it doesn’t follow all the rules that are usually associated with vampires. While many vampire rules are mentioned in the film, or are even integral parts of its story, others are not addressed by the end of Sinners. It is currently not known whether a sequel to Sinners will be made, but for now, here are the vampire rules that Coogler’s horror movie follows and breaks:

Vampires Need To Be Invited Into Buildings

Follows

Close

In a lot of vampire stories, the supernatural creatures cannot enter a building unless they are invited in. This is perhaps the most important vampire rule that is addressed in Sinners. This rule is established fairly early in the film, when Remmick asks if he can enter Joan and Bert’s home. Once in their home, he turns them both into vampires, and they become the first members of his group, which grows much bigger throughout the course of the movie. When they visit Club Juke, they try to get invited in, but Smoke and Stack refuse.

Once Smoke and the rest of the survivors discover that they are dealing with vampires, they would have been safe if they just stayed in the building. However, wanting to prevent the vampires from turning other people in the town, Grace invites them in, which leads to Sinners’ intense climax. Once they are invited in, all of Remmick’s vampires can attack Smoke and the other humans, which leads to many of them dying. After the vampire attack, Smoke and Sammie are the only survivors.

Vampires Don’t Have Reflections

Breaks

Peter Dreimanis as Bert, Jack O'Connell as Remmick, Hailee Steinfeld as Mary, and Lola Kirke as Joan in Sinners

Vampires not having reflections is a rule that Sinners does not address. This rule stemmed from the belief that mirrors do not reflect someone’s true appearance, but rather their soul. Therefore, since they are technically undead and do not have a soul, vampires do not have reflections in many horror stories. In horror movies, this is often a way for human characters to figure out if someone they suspect to be a vampire is actually one. However, this method is never utilized in Sinners.

Since there are a lot of cars parked outside of the club, characters like Bo could have tried to escape from the vampires and look into his car mirrors to try to spot them.

In Sinners, the vampire’s lack of reflections could have been shown in Joan and Bert’s house, or by using the car mirrors outside of Smoke and Stack’s club. Since there are a lot of cars parked outside of the club, characters like Bo could have tried to escape from the vampires and look into his car mirrors to try to spot them. If he couldn’t see them in the mirrors, this could have explained how he is turned. This could have been another scary sequence in Sinners, but the film chooses not to address vampire reflections.

Using Garlic Can Weaken A Vampire

Follows

Sinners-12

Another vampire rule that Sinners follows is that the creatures become weak around garlic. In a lot of vampire stories, vampires do not like being exposed to garlic, as it appears to bring them physical pain. In some stories, it is even possible to kill a vampire by exposing them to a lot of garlic. Over the last several hundred years, this has become one of the most popular vampire rules due to garlic’s strong antibiotic properties, which help ward off decay.

While no vampires are actually killed by garlic in Sinners, it is established that showing them garlic will cause them to back off and even cause them physical pain. When they first discover that they are being haunted by vampires, Smoke and the rest of the survivors actually eat a piece of garlic so that they can make sure that they have not been bitten. Pearline is initially reluctant to do so since she hates garlic, which leads to some concern from the other survivors, but she eventually eats it, proving that she is not a vampire.

Vampires Cast No Shadows

Breaks

Sinners-26

Building on the rule that vampires do not have reflections, many vampires in popular horror stories also do not cast shadows. This is once again the case because of their soulless nature and is another major indicator that someone is actually a vampire. No shadows, along with their lack of reflection, are great ways to prove that someone is a vampire, since it is something that can easily be seen with one’s own eyes. However, just like their lack of reflections, vampires casting no shadows is something that is not addressed in Sinners.

Since vampires cannot be in the sun in Sinners, there is perhaps not an ideal time to showcase that they have no shadows in the film. However, even though Smoke and Stack’s club is dimly lit, there are some light sources which could have proven that the vampires have no shadows. This could have further indicated that characters like Stack and Mary are vampires when they are in the club early in the movie. However, it seems like this is not a rule that Coogler was interested in addressing in Sinners.

Vampires Can Be Killed With Wooden Stakes To The Heart

Follows

Close

In a lot of vampire stories, perhaps the most popular way to kill the supernatural creatures is by stabbing them in the heart with a wooden stake. In vampire lore, this symbolizes a spiritual purification and releases the soul that is trapped in the undead body. Unsurprisingly, this is the main way that the characters in Sinners kill the vampires. Before Remmick and the other vampires enter the club, all the humans make sure they are equipped with wooden stakes.

After their intense fight at the end of the film, Smoke chooses not to kill Stack.

During Sinners’ climax, Smoke uses a wooden stake to kill Annie after she is bitten, which allows her soul to move on to the afterlife. By doing this, he keeps the promise that he made her earlier in the movie. However, he can’t do the same to his brother, Stack. After their intense fight at the end of the film, Smoke chooses not to kill Stack, which leads to him returning to visit a much older Sammie in the post-credits scene of Sinners. However, Smoke does indeed use a wooden stake to kill Remmick, ridding the world of his evil.

Sunlight Can Kill Vampires

Follows

Smoke holds Sammie as they watch in horror in Sinners movie

Vampires being killed by sunlight is actually a more recent rule involving the supernatural creatures. In Bram Stoker’s Dracula, perhaps the most popular vampire story of all time, the titular vampire was only weakened by sunlight. However, in the 1922 film Nosferatu, Count Orlok was destroyed by sunlight, which is a rule that many other vampire stories have chosen to follow. Whether they are just weakened by sunlight or killed by it, this is why vampires typically spend their days resting in coffins, and only choose to go out at night.

From the first time Remmick shows up in Sinners, it is established that vampires start to burn when exposed to sunlight. Then, after Smoke kills Remmick at the end of the movie, the sun finally rises and all his vampires burn outside the club. This is an easy way for Smoke and Sammie to wipe out most of the vampires at once, after struggling to kill them when it was still dark out. The only vampires that avoid being burned in Sinners are Stack and Mary, who return at the end of the movie.

2

Vampires Can Be Killed With Shots To The Head

Breaks

Stack handing Smoke a cigarette in Sinners

This is not a rule that is followed in all vampire stories. In some stories, humans need to come up with more creative ways to kill vampires, such as with garlic, sunlight, holy objects, or silver. However, in other stories, vampires can be killed with a shot to the head. Shooting a vampire in the head can lead to significant damage to the brain, which will lead to their death. However, while shots to the head definitely hurt the vampires in Sinners, it doesn’t kill them.

Jack O’Connell’s Remmick is the charismatic and traditional vampire who kicks off the devilish chaos in Sinners, and he has a fascinating backstory.

This becomes evident when Smoke shoots Cornbread after he tries biting him at the entrance of the club. When Cornbread grabs hold of his arm, Smoke quickly pulls out his pistol and shoots him in the head. While this knocks Cornbread down, he quickly gets back up. For the rest of the movie, Cornbread has a visible wound on his face from the gunshot, but he is otherwise completely fine. Therefore, while this can slow them down, shooting them in the head does not kill the vampires in Sinners.

Vampires Are Immortal (Or Have Prolonged Lives)

Follows

Close

Since vampires are considered to be undead, they will never experience physical death from natural causes. Therefore, unless they are killed through some of the other aforementioned methods, vampires can technically live forever, or at least for far longer than humans. While most of the vampires in Sinners turn during the events of the film, Remmick is a much more experienced vampire. In fact, Remmick is actually 600 years old during the events of Sinners, proving that vampires can live for a long, long time, potentially forever.

Even though the post-credits scene of Sinners seems to tease a sequel, Ryan Coogler has revealed that he hasn’t thought about making a follow-up movie.

While Remmick is killed at the end of Sinners, Stack and Mary survive the events of the film and return 60 years later. When they return in 1992 to visit an elderly Sammie at his club, Stack and Mary look like they haven’t aged a day. This proves that Sinners’ vampires will remain whatever age they were when they were turned for eternity, as long as they are not killed in other ways. It is currently unknown if there will ever be a sequel to Sinners, but seeing more of Stack and Mary in the 90s would be amazing.
