Dan and Ben: An Unlikely Connection
The film tells the story of Dan Evans (played by Christian Bale), a Civil War veteran who desperately needs money to save his farm. In a twist of fate, he meets outlaw Ben Wade, played by Russell Crowe, who has been captured by law enforcement and is scheduled to be incarcerated in Yuma, Arizona. In an effort to earn a much-needed $200, Dan joins a group tasked with escorting Ben to the Conscious City train station.
For much of the film, 3:10 to Yuma depicts Dan as a man with a real plan. However, as the story unfolds, the story becomes more complicated when Ben learns that Dan served in the Civil War. Despite their differences, Ben grew to admire Dan’s idealism and they discussed religion and retribution, although they never truly became friends.
resistance and confrontation
The story takes a major turn when outlaw Charlie Prince, played by Ben Foster, tracks Ben down and plots the murder of several bailiffs. Despite the growing danger, Dan refuses to give up and continues to fight against them. This resistance led to a confrontation between Ben and Dan, resulting in Ben strangling Dan to death. This moment marks a shift in tone for the film, which explores themes of self, pride and legacy.

Vulnerability and redemption
Dan admits the tragic truth about his past and reveals that he was never a hero and was actually shot by one of his own men during the Civil War, a story he challenges Ben to share with his own son. Touched by Dan’s vulnerability, Ben lets go and the story takes on deeper meaning. Instead of running away with Charlie and his gang, Ben agrees to board the train just so Dan can build a legacy that he and his son can be proud of.
Reveal motivation and acceptance
Later, at the train station, Ben expands on his motives, admitting that he’s escaped from Yuma prison not once, but twice before. This revelation brought a smile to Dan because it represented another silver lining in their story, knowing that Ben would likely escape again in the future. At this point, Dan realizes that he never had control of the situation and accepts his place in the world.
Dark turns and redemption
However, Mangold’s adaptation adds two existential twists to the story. After boarding the train and fulfilling his promise, Ben found himself confronted by Charlie Prince, who shot Dan four times in the chest. The camera focuses on Ben’s face, revealing his intense anger and inner turmoil. In response, he murdered his betrayer.

As Dan lay dying, his son William emerged as a key figure in honoring his father’s legacy by refusing to seek revenge on Ben. Ironically, it is through this act of restraint and rejection of violence that Ben’s humanity is restored.
The ending of the film becomes a redemption story, not only for Ben but for Dan as well, as they both find redemption in the face of adversity. All in all, the 2007 adaptation of “3 Minutes and 10 Seconds to Yuma” differs from the original work, with a darker and more bloody climax.
