15 Best Movies Like Kristen Stewart’s Spencer

The late Princess Diana is beloved by many even after her death over 20 years ago. She remains a popular figure in film and TV, with many fictionalized dramas, biopics, and even musicals attempting to portray her. Spencer is the latest film to tell her story, with Kristen Stewart taking up the titular role. Stewart has received rave reviews for her performance as well as an Oscar and Golden Globe nomination despite initial skepticism that she would do the role justice.

Princess Diana is, of course, not the only high-profile woman to undergo hardships. Many other historical women have faced similar challenges, such as troubled marriages and mental health problems, and have been portrayed on the silver screen. These female-centered biographical stories are powerful and moving, so much so that many of the cast won Oscars for their portrayals. While many will draw comparisons to Spencer, they are not the only movies like Spencer that audiences might be interested in.

Jackie (2016)

A Portrait Of A Grieving First Lady

Natalie Portman as Jackie Kennedy wearing a red skirt suit in a fancy room in Jackie (2016).

Spencer is not director Pablo Larraín’s first film about a real-life female figure experiencing hardship. In 2016, he directed Jackie, based on the former First Lady, Jackie Kennedy. The biopic follows her before, during, and after the days of President John F. Kennedy’s assassination.

Having been a notable socialite, Jackie Kennedy also experienced similar hardships to Princess Diana, such as her husband’s rumored affairs. While much of the world simply viewed her as a fashionable woman with a powerful husband, the movie makes it clear she is more. In the film, Jackie emotionally struggles with the aftermath of her husband’s death and motherhood. Jackie showcases a heartbreaking portrait in which the titular character tries to regain control of her life, much like Princess Diana in Spencer.

In one of Natalie Portman’s most iconic roles, she delivers a touching and flawless performance as Jackie Kennedy, which earned her second Oscar nomination.

Because Spencer focuses on Diana’s intense loneliness and sadness, it can be emotionally draining for the audience. Another emotionally draining piece with a woman at the center is The Assistant.

Though the movie has been compared to real-life stories connected to Harvey Weinstein, it is a fictional story, and not the easiest story to digest. It follows Jane (Julia Garner), an assistant to the person in charge of a film production office. Jane is plagued by her boss, who the audience can see is a predator (though he never appears on screen) but whose reports about have been ignored by Human Resources. The movie chronicles how Jane gets through her day working for a man she tries to report for creating a culture of sexual harassment.

Unlike Spencer, which at least gets to the point where Diana is able to leave, The Assistant does not offer a neat resolution to the conflict in Jane’s life. Both movies are fantastic psychological portraits of women in difficult situations, and they are both important modern pictures with actresses who are able to completely transform themselves for their roles.

Both movies are also incredibly claustrophobic with Diana confined to an estate and the bulk of Jane’s screen time being in the office. That sense of claustrophobia helps to link the feel and the performances in these two movies.

Marie Antoinette is helmed by Sofia Coppola, so it has a beautiful color palette and a fantastic soundtrack that helps to sell the opulence the titular ruler was known for. Both Marie Antoinette and Spencer paint portraits of royalty that are especially harsh. While one powerful royal cares about nothing around her, the other is controlling and careful of perception, leaving the people around them to be collateral damage.

While Coppola’s movie is more of a satirical period piece and Spencer is more of a psychological thriller, both movies highlight wealth and power through fantastic set pieces and high fashion. The high fashion of Marie Antoinette’s life is different than that of Princess Diana’s, but the link is still there. Both movies highlight scandals in the lives of the women at their center, but they do it while both women are being clad in the most beautiful and most expensive clothing and jewelry of their times.

The look and feel of the two movies might be different, but the commentary they both provide about royalty, their access to wealth and fashion, and the disregard they have for those they consider beneath them are all there.

At first glance, it might seem counterintuitive that a movie about the life of Princess Diana would have anything in common with a story by Stephen King. The two have received a lot of comparisons from critics though, as certain shots and sequences in Spencer deliberately call to mind the events of The Shining in Stanley Kubrick’s movie version of the story.

The Shining sees a family fall apart when they become the caretakers of a supposedly haunted hotel. While they become increasingly isolated and haunted, Jack (Jack Nicholson) is slowly driven to violence and Wendy (Shelley Duvall) has to save the life of herself and her son (Danny Lloyd).

Both movies call to mind elements of horror, essentially operating as haunted house movies, even though they are very different from one another. While the hotel in The Shining is intentionally creepy, Diana’s stay becomes more so the more isolated she becomes and the more convinced she is that she is being haunted as well.

Black Swan might be set in a very different arena than Spencer, but it does handle similar themes. Both stories feature women under tremendous pressure. Though Natalie Portman’s Nina is not literally isolated, she is metaphorically isolated in a very selective career path as a prima ballerina under immense pressure to hold onto the starring role.

Nina sinks into a world of paranoia and delusion. She is sure that everyone around her is out to get her, including a new ballerina who she is sure wants to replace her. Her delusions become so detailed that she is sure she sleeps with her rival, gets into a physical altercation with her, and even stabs her, but those are not entirely accurate.

While the way Nina bends to the pressure of her situation is violent and obvious, Princess Diana’s bending is a bit more subtle. She has her own delusion in the haunted house aspect of Spencer as she becomes sure she is being haunted by Anne Boleyn, for example. Her own actions are directed against herself, like the scene with her pearl necklace, instead of perceived against others. The pressure, the isolation, and the desperation of these two women, however, is readily apparent.

Natalie Portman won an Oscar and Golden Globe for her role.

If the appeal of Spencer is how well Kristen Stewart transforms into someone else that the public is familiar with, then other biopics with similar themes will also appeal to them. Though Stewart has been in a slew of movies and has proven herself an adept character actress, disappearing into roles, Spencer is one of the first time the general movie-watching public has really seen that.

Nicole Kidman has a more storied career than Stewart by virtue of being in the business longer and in more prestigious movies. She still faced the same kind of scrutiny that Stewart did when she was cast as Lucille Ball in Being the Ricardos. Many believed Kidman did not have the same comedy chops to step into the shoes of the woman who brought Lucy to TV screens everywhere.

Both actors proved that they know exactly how to study a real person and bring them to life on the screen. Both of their movies take some liberties with real events and focus on specific points in time for their biopic subjects. Both movies also see the women in relationships that appear perfect to the outside, but have cracks in their foundation.

Nicole Kidman was nominated for an Oscar and earned a Golden Globe for her role.

The Iron Lady (2011)

A Look At The Controversial British Prime Minister

Meryl Streep standing in front of protestors in The Iron Lady

The Iron Lady follows the former British Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher, as she looks back at her controversial career and the impact it had on her personal life. Meryl Streep portrayed Thatcher in this 2011 biopic.

The Iron Lady reflects on Thatcher’s accomplishments as Britain’s first female Prime Minister but also highlights how her career impacted her personally. It dives into her psychological well-being years after having stepped down as the PM. The film also focuses on the highs and lows of her marriage, but it nevertheless showcases her love for her late husband. In one of Meryl Streep’s best movies, according to IMDb, she delivers a masterclass performance which earned her a second Academy Award for Best Actress.

While the movie is more of a standard biopic than Spencer, it does still allow for the audience to understand the psychological pressure that comes with being a public figure.

Judy (2019)

The Later Years Of Judy Garland’s Career

Renee Zellweger as Judy Garland in Judy

Biopics are not just about noble political figures like Jackie Kennedy and Princess Diana but have recently told the story of some of Hollywood’s greatest performers. Such is the case with Rupert Goold’s Judy. The biopic follows the later years of Judy Garland, in which she now performs at sold-out shows in London.

Zellweger won an Oscar and a Golden Globe for Best Actress.

Like Spencer, Judy showcases Garland’s hardship after living past her so-called prime. It reflects on her past as a child star filled with strict rules and challenges that caused health problems, including eating disorders. The film also follows her romance with her soon-to-be husband and the troubles afterward.

It serves as a tribute to Garland, driven by Renée Zellweger’s riveting performance in the titular role. Much like Stewart, she disappears into the role of the iconic woman in a way that shocked a lot of critics and audience members.

Frida (2002)

A Portrait Of The Artist’s Life

Salma Hayek looks at the camera as Frida Kahlo in Frida

Frida Kahlo is one of the most talented painters in history, and much of her work stems from her life in Mexico. Of course, life was not easy for the Mexican painter, depicted in the 2002 biopic, Frida. The film centers on her controversial life as an artist and her tumultuous relationship with her mentor.

Frida celebrates the life of Kahlo, focusing on her artistic expressions and ideologies that were considered radical during her time. Of course, the film highlights her rocky marriage, which shares parallels with Princess Diana’s in Spencer. In fact, difficult relationships are a hallmark of many of the leading ladies in movies like Spencer.

Nevertheless, it does not minimize her outstanding work as an artist, and in a way, helps to bring her art to life. Salma Hayek gracefully portrays Kahlo and her life, with the role earning her an Oscar nomination.

Respect (2021)

Jennifer Hudson Becomes Aretha Franklin

Jennifer Hudson as Aretha Franklin sings on stage in Respect

Aretha Franklin is one of the most celebrated musicians of all time. Respect narrates her life from her rough childhood to her independence as an adult. It is mostly a standard biopic that charts her rise to fame.

Respect allows fans to relive the best of Aretha Franklin with her music, but it also dives into the deeper meaning of her songs. Like Princess Diana in Spencer, Franklin also struggled with her marriage. But, the film depicts her growth and determination to reclaim her power and voice, much like Spencer shows Diana finding a way to leave.

Of course, much like Stewart in her film, Jennifer Hudson perfectly transforms into Franklin, even covering the best of her music in the film. Like Stewart, Hudson was expected to be a contender for the award season following the release of the movie, but she was not even nominated for most major award shows. She did, however, pick up both Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture and Entertainer of the Year Awards at the NAACP Image Awards.

Unfortunately, royalty has a long history of infidelity and wedded hardship, but nothing can compare to the story of Henry VIII’s many marriages. One of his most infamous marriages was to Anne Boleyn, as depicted in The Other Boleyn Girl, one of the top films about the English monarchy.

Spencer follows the events of Diana’s misery during Christmas and, as she passes the time, she reads a book about Anne Boleyn, which resonates with her due to her husband’s affair and the women’s similar miseries. The Other Boleyn Girl dives deeper into the historical backstory of Boleyn and her marriage to the king. Although the film is not without its flaws and historical inaccuracies, the soap opera aspects are entertaining enough for viewers to enjoy.

It’s not exactly the same in tone or subject matter as Spencer, but audience members who were intrigued by Spencer‘s focus on Anne Boleyn will be interested to see this take on her story.

Wild (2014)

Reese Witherspoon Takes An Epic Journey

Reese Witherspoon with a backpack in Wild

Many women have suffered through misfortunes in their lives. The 2014 film Wild tells the story of one such woman, Cheryl Strayed (Reese Witherspoon), who goes on an enlightening adventure.

Like Spencer, Wild dives into Strayed’s difficult experiences, such as a rough breakup, as well as substance abuse. Even though walking a long trail may sound extreme, the film depicts how it can also lead to self-discovery and the ability to move on. It is an emotional journey, driven by a powerful performance from Reese Witherspoon, which will leave viewers on the edge of their seats.

While Spencer is claustrophobic in its tale of how Princess Diana deals with the psychological pressures she faces, Wild allows Cheryl a lot more breathing room. Both movies see two women at the center who feel like their worlds are crumbling, but they are both given very different tracks to deal with that.

Princess Diana lived a difficult life as a royal, and Spencer only touches on parts of it because of its condensed timeline. Fortunately, dramatized movies and TV shows are not the only sources to pay tribute to Diana’s life. Prince William and Prince Harry commissioned a documentary, Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy. It was their way to explore her story without any fictional changes.

The documentary serves as a brilliant tribute to the beloved princess as it looks at her biggest accomplishments, including working alongside homelessness and AIDS charities. While Spencer portrays some moments of her relationship with her two sons, the documentary primarily focuses on Diana’s life as a mother with contributions from both of the princes. Therefore, the documentary is a must-watch for Princess Diana fans.

In its opening, Spencer tells the audience that it is a fable inspired by truth, but here, the audience gets to see some of that truth brought to life.

The Queen (2006)

A Postscript For Spencer

Helen Mirren reading the newspaper as Queen Elizabeth in The Queen

The Queen is perhaps one of the most notable movies about the royal family. The film follows the tragic death of Princess Diana. It covers the actions, reactions, and decision-making of the prime minister, Tony Blair, and the royal family, as they try to plan the best way to mourn her death on a national scale.

Even with her death, her presence is prominent in The Queen and speaks to the significance of Diana’s legacy. The engaging film foretells the controversial mindset and decision-making of the royal family during this period and journeys through the family’s difficulties in maintaining public trust. Of course, the performances of the cast, especially Helen Mirren and Martin Sheen, are phenomenal.

The movie almost acts as a postscript for Spencer. It tells the audience what eventually happens to Diana and how the same royal family who left her in isolation deals with that later.

Mirren won an Oscar for Best Actress for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth.

The Duchess (2008)

Keira Knightly as Georgiana Cavendish in The Duchess

In The Duchess, Georgiana Cavendish, Duchess of Devonshire, thought she was living the fairytale dream with her high-profile marriage. Sadly, she experiences a failed marriage filled with infidelity. As a result, however, she falls in love with another man.

The Duchess is a period film infused with notes of feminism, showcasing its precedent in a historical context. Keira Knightley delivers a stellar performance as the titular character, adding power to Georgiana’s voice during a crucial period. Though Knightley had already appeared in many period pieces at this point in her career, she managed to make herself stand out in each and every one of them.

It can be hard to draw lines between a period piece like this one and the more modern story of Diana, but the two women have a lot in common. Like Princess Diana in Spencer, the Duchess also lives her life in the aristocracy feeling like an outsider. She also suffers under the weight of an unhappy marriage when she thought she would be at her happiest.

Much like Kristen Stewart in Spencer, Kiera Knightley is able to completely embody the role, proving both movies to have perfect casting.
