Thanks in part to Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman’s brilliant senses of humor, Deadpool & Wolverine has quickly become one of the most popular projects in the MCU, and the franchise’s funniest installment by far. When Reynolds was confirmed to be returning as Wade Wilson’s Deadpool after Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox, there were concerns that the mature, R-rated comedy and violence of Deadpool and Deadpool 2 would be lost in the MCU’s family-friendly tones. This wasn’t the case, however, and Deadpool & Wolverine was perhaps even more boundary-pushing than its predecessors.

Deadpool & Wolverine joined the $1 billion club in August, being the first MCU movie to do so since 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home. The massive success of Deadpool & Wolverine can be attributed to the remarkable marketing campaign for the movie, but also to the incredible talents of Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, who infused the promo tour with camaraderie, comedy and passion. This can also be seen in Deadpool & Wolverine itself, as many moments in the Phase 5 movie had us crying with laughter.

12 Deadpool Tells Fox To “Suck It”
Deadpool Happily Abandons 20th Century Fox For Marvel Studios
Close
Towards the beginning of Deadpool & Wolverine, Wade Wilson is taken from his home in Earth-10005 by the Time Variance Authority. Matthew Macfadyen’s Mr. Paradox informs Wade of Earth-10005’s deterioration following the death of its Anchor Being, Wolverine, and offers him a place in Earth-616, the MCU’s Sacred Timeline. This leads to a brilliant moment, which sees Wade Wilson grab the camera and a microphone, and tell 20th Century Fox to “suck it,” noting that he’s on his way to Disneyland instead.
20th Century Fox and its properties were purchased by The Walt Disney Company in 2019 for over $71 billion. This acquisition saw Disney gain the film rights to major franchises and Marvel characters that had previously been unusable, including the X-Men, the Fantastic Four and Deadpool. It was inevitable that this acquisition would be mentioned in Deadpool & Wolverine, as the Merc with a Mouth couldn’t have joined the MCU without it, and using a fourth wall break to bid farewell to Fox in this confident manner was an inspired choice.

11 Nicepool Doesn’t Regenerate
A Moment Of Silence Makes This Scene Even Better
As well as portraying Earth-10005’s Deadpool, Ryan Reynolds also appeared as one of his variants, Nicepool. This version wore tougher armor than Earth-10005’s Deadpool, had longer hair, some of which was tied in a man-bun, and traveled with a canine companion, Mary Puppins, a.k.a. Dogpool. Living up to his name, Nicepool was also incredibly nice, which made his interactions with Earth-10005’s aggressive and abrasive Deadpool even more hilarious, especially after the latter uses Nicepool as a human shield when faced with the Deadpool Corps.
After Deadpool asks Nicepool how long it usually takes him to regenerate, Nicepool’s delivery of the question, “Regenerate?,” is simply perfect. With no scars, Nicepool presumably has no cancer, and underwent no experimentation, meaning he hasn’t gained the regenerative abilities of other Deadpool variants. Deadpool and Wolverine’s moment of silence after Nicepool’s question response gives the audience a chance to breathe, but also makes this moment even more hilarious, especially since it’s followed by a wonderful back-and-forth between Deadpool and Wolverine.

10 Kevin Feige’s Guideline Is Discussed By Wade Wilson & Blind Al
Kevin Feige’s Only Rule Wasn’t Followed Completely
Close
Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy revealed on the Happy Sad Confused Podcast in August that Kevin Feige’s one rule for the movie was that perhaps the drug use of its predecessors could be removed. Wade Wilson and Blind Al had been the subjects of many cocaine-centric jokes in Deadpool and Deadpool 2, but Feige seemingly felt this way too far for the MCU. Deadpool & Wolverine stuck to this guideline, but this did create the opportunity for Wade Wilson and Blind Al to exchange a hilarious conversation during Wade’s birthday party.
This idea of Wade being given an opportunity to level up into the bigs, and the delusional confidence that Wade would have in declaring himself a messiah… That just made us laugh, and felt very Wade Wilson, and so that was early, that was an early one, and so was naming that the only rule we were given by Feige is no cocaine… Which is absolutely a fact. Early on, Kevin was like, “Look, we want a fully ‘Deadpool’ Deadpool movie. The only thing maybe is, maybe we don’t do all the drug use, the cocaine use with Al and Wade.” And we were like, “Yes sir, yep, copy that,” and we went home and literally wrote the joke about Feige requesting no cocaine, and it became one of the first jokes that we wrote.
This moment saw Wade Wilson and Blind Ali list several synonyms for cocaine, allowing them to share their experience with the drug with the audience, without actually seeing any of the substance on-screen. This was a great way to stick to Kevin Feige’s guideline for Deadpool & Wolverine while still paying homage to both Wade Wilson and Blind Al’s questionable pasts. Deadpool & Wolverine proved that we can have a strong Deadpool adventure without drug use, so perhaps Kevin Feige was right all along, though the joke was still appreciated.
9 Wolverine Stops Pyro Mid-Speech
Not Everyone Gets A Speech
Close
All too often, MCU villains feel it appropriate to burst into long speeches about why they’re right and why the heroes are bound to lose, and Aaron Stanford’s Pyro almost tried this in Deadpool & Wolverine, but was abruptly stopped by Wolverine. With a swift and hilarious punch to the face, Pyro’s speech ended, with Wolverine even noting that “not everyone gets a speech.” This was perhaps Wolverine’s own attempt at being meta, without the use of fourth wall breaks that Deadpool can pull off, and it certainly worked.
Pyro’s speech would have been aimed at Emma Corrin’s Cassandra Nova, who had just been trapped by Deadpool and Wolverine with the help of Juggernaut’s helmet. However, with no time to waste, Wolverine had to stop Pyro part-way through his speech, but this created one of Deadpool & Wolverine’s funniest moments. Although a different version, Wolverine had perhaps been waiting to punch Pyro in the face since the latter turned his back on the X-Men in 2003’s X2: X-Men United, so this was a brilliant and perfectly-timed interaction in the MCU.

8 Deadpool Makes An Educated Wish
This Has Become One Of Deadpool’s Most Quotable Lines
What has quickly become one of Deadpool & Wolverine’s most quotable lines bridges the gap between one of the movie’s funniest and also most heartbreaking moments. After letting slip that he didn’t actually know whether the TVA could fix Wolverine’s home reality, Deadpool suggests that he simply made an “educated wish.” This concept is evidently completely made up, a combination of an educated guess and a wish, but Reynolds’ delivery of this line, and Jackman’s response have perfect comedic timing and highlight the differences between these two antiheroes.
Deadpool’s hilariously made-up concept quickly turns from funny to tragic, however, as this leads to Wolverine brutally tearing into him in a moment that showcases Hugh Jackman’s remarkable talent. This culminates in an epic battle between the pair that ruins their Honda Odyssey and puts both these characters’ animalistic and unadulterated techniques on display. Thankfully, the idea of an “educated wish” is repeated throughout the rest of the movie, highlighting its fantastic significance and its joyful nature.

7 Chris Evans Pulls The Bait & Switch With “Flame On”
Chris Evans Shockingly Returned As Johnny Storm’s Human Torch
Close
Deadpool & Wolverine was always expected to feature cameo appearances from a number of former Marvel actors, but Chris Evans popping up in the movie was a complete surprise. Initially, he could have easily been seen to be playing a variant of his veteran MCU superhero, Steve Rogers’ Captain America, with the same blue-and-red coloring seen on his costume. However, while Deadpool waited for him to exclaim, “Avengers assemble,” Evans actually revealed himself to be Johnny Storm’s Human Torch by shouting “Flame on!”
Chris Evans portrayed Johnny Storm in 2005’s Fantastic Four and its 2007 sequel, long before he was cast as Captain America in the MCU’s Phase 1. While he is very protective of Steve Rogers, and reluctant to bring his super soldier back to the MCU, Johnny Storm was fair game, especially since he never had a proper ending in the former Fox duology. This was a fantastic moment, made even better by Deadpool’s stunned reaction and Wolverine claiming they had no idea who Johnny Storm was.

6 Deadpool References That Oscars Moment
Keep His Country’s Name Out Of Your Mouth
The world was shocked when Will Smith got up on stage at 2022’s 94th Academy Awards ceremony and slapped comedian Chris Rock in the face after the latter made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith’s shaved head, which was a result of alopecia. Smith then proceeded to shout at Rock from his seat in the audience, yelling, “keep my wife’s name out [of] your f***ing mouth.” This caused huge controversy, leading to repercussions to Smith and a lull in his career, despite winning the Oscar for Best Actor, but Deadpool & Wolverine proves just how legendary this moment has become.
During his initial battle against TVA Minute Men in the snowy forest from Logan’s emotional ending, one soldier begins to bad-mouth Canada, Ryan Reynolds’ home nation. This prompts Deadpool to break his no weapons rule, bouncing a sword off the ground that ends up in the TVA soldier’s throat. He then demands, “take my country’s name out of your f***ing mouth,” mirroring Will Smith’s actions at the Academy Awards ceremony. Even after almost two-and-a-half years, this is still a brilliant source of comedy.
Deadpool has made many references to Canada in previous
Deadpool
movies, referencing both Ryan Reynolds and Wade Wilson’s roots in Canada.
5 Elektra’s Response To Deadpool’s Condolences (& That Other Divorce Joke)
The Fate Of Ben Affleck’s Daredevil Was Confirmed In Deadpool & Wolverine
One of the best moments of Deadpool & Wolverine was when Jennifer Garner’s Elektra, Wesley Snipes’ Blade, Channing Tatum’s Gambit and Dafne Keen’s Laura came through the door to meet Wade Wilson and Logan. The former previously appeared in 2003’s Daredevil and its 2005 sequel, Elektra, both of which received a mostly negative response. Garner’s performance in Deadpool & Wolverine was much more powerful, and this even saw her take part in a divorce joke concerning her ex-husband, Ben Affleck, who played Matt Murdock’s Daredevil opposite her.
When given condolences about Daredevil’s demise, Elektra nonchalantly states, “it’s fine,” seemingly uncaring about the loss of her partner. Garner and Affleck divorced in 2018, and her blasé response to Daredevil’s death is a playful parallel. This isn’t the only divorce joke in Deadpool & Wolverine, however, and the other, focused on Hugh Jackman’s divorce from his wife of nearly 30 years, Deborra-Lee Furness, is much more dicey, but even more hilarious. Deadpool states that Wolverine is “usually shirtless, but he’s let himself go since the divorce,” contributing to one of Deadpool & Wolverine’s most shocking and memorable jokes.

4 All Of Deadpool’s Reactions To Gambit’s Accent
Channing Tatum Finally Got His Turn As Gambit
Close
It was amazing to see Channing Tatum finally suit up as Gambit in Deadpool & Wolverine, after almost two decades of lobbying for the role of the iconic X-Men member in Fox’s X-Men franchise. Tatum’s performance has been massively praised, leading to speculation of a possible Gambit solo movie in the MCU’s future. This also provided some excellent moments of comedy that contributed to some of Deadpool & Wolverine’s funniest scenes, as Deadpool constantly struggled to understand Remy LeBeau due to his thick Cajun accent.
Gambit’s quotes, including the likes of “maybe I was born here, it’s hard to know for sure,” “I’m about to make a name for myself here,” and “I ain’t know my daddy, but I’m sure I shot out of his d*** ready,” were hilarious simply because of Tatum’s delivery. These lines were made even funnier because of Deadpool’s reactions, however, particularly when suggesting that his dialect coach must have been the Despicable Me franchise’s Minions. These small moments were laugh-out-loud funny, mixed with the sheer joy of seeing Channing Tatum finally live his dream role.

3 Deadpool Dances To NSYNC’s “Bye Bye Bye”
Deadpool’s Dance Calls Back To Fox’s Former X-Men Franchise
Close
Deadpool’s fight against the TVA’s Minute Men, which saw him use Earth-10005’s Wolverine’s adamantium bones as weapons, became the opening credits of Deadpool & Wolverine. However, this scene of sheer brutality and violence was spliced with moments of Deadpool dancing to NSYNC’s 2000 hit, “Bye Bye Bye”, copying the boyband’s exact moves from the song’s music video. This was truly a sight to behold, as professional dancer Nick Pauley did a supreme job of delivering the dance moves while sporting the Deadpool suit.
Deadpool dancing to NSYNC called back to 2003’s X2: X-Men United, during which “Bye Bye Bye” played suddenly on the radio in Cyclops’ car, and also to the music video for Celine Dion’s “Ashes,” the song which plays over the opening credits of 2018’s Deadpool 2. In the music video, Deadpool suggests he should have asked NSYNC to perform the song instead. These callbacks, and Deadpool’s expert moves in Deadpool & Wolverine contributed to one of the movie’s funniest and juxtaposing moments, which has quickly become a viral sensation.

2 The Proposal
Nicepool Can Break The Fourth Wall Too
Deadpool has become well known for his ability to break the fourth wall, similarly to the MCU’s Jennifer Walters, a.k.a. She-Hulk, and this continued expertly in Deadpool & Wolverine. In one of the movie’s most subversive, shocking and laughable fourth wall breaks, however, it’s not Deadpool who speaks to the audience, but Nicepool, shortly before his tragic demise. “Gently tapping” the fourth wall, Nicepool simply turns to the camera and states, “The Proposal,” before turning back, surely inciting huge laughter from audiences everywhere.
The Proposal is a 2009 romantic comedy movie that saw Ryan Reynolds star opposite Sandra Bullock. Nicepool’s attempt at pulling off a meta fourth wall break in Deadpool & Wolverine will go down in history as one of the MCU’s funniest moments. Deadpool becomes furious at Nicepool’s lackluster image of his own fourth wall breaks and lack of creativity when coming up with his own, which perhaps seals the deal for Deadpool to actively cause Nicepool’s demise at the hands of the Deadpool Corps.

1 Johnny Storm Actually Does Say All That About Cassandra Nova
Deadpool & Wolverine’s Post-Credits Scene Is Hilarious
Close
While it’s hard to narrow down the funniest moments in the movie, perhaps the most memorable moment that spurred intense laughter was delivered during Deadpool & Wolverine’s post-credits scene. Earlier in the movie, Deadpool had recited Johnny Storm’s comments regarding Cassandra Nova to the villain herself, which he denied ever having said, directly leading to his brutal death. The post-credits scene confirmed that he had, in fact, said it all, and seeing Chris Evans voice a number of unexpected expletives was intensely funny.
JOHNNY STORM:
“In the void, you’re either food for Alioth or you work for her… And I’ll tell you who ‘her’ is: Cassandra Nova. A megalomaniacal, psychotic a**hole. A finger licking dead-inside pixie slab of third-rate dime-store nut-milk. And I’ll tell you what she can do… She can lick my goddamn cinnamon ring clean and kick rocks all the way to bald hell. In fact, I don’t give a s*** if she removes all my skin and pops me like some nightmarish blood balloon. If the last thing I do in this godforsaken c**-gutter existence is light that f***-box on fire, I still won’t die happy! That’s right, Wade. I won’t be happy until I’ve urinated on her freshly barbecued corpse and husk-f***ed the charred remains while gargling Juggernaut’s juggernuts… And you can quote me.”
One would be forgiven for never expecting Chris Evans to deliver this incredibly graphic and obscene monologue in the MCU, as he had previously been seen to be the patriotic and put-together Steve Rogers. However, Evans himself has noted that he loved learning these lines. This was the perfect way to end Deadpool & Wolverine, giving audiences one last moment with Johnny Storm while calling back to his demise earlier in the movie and proving Deadpool right. Viewers will surely be laughing over this legendary post-credits scene for years to come.
