10 Most Heartbreaking Deaths In The MCU We’ll Never Get Over

Warning! This article contains SPOILERS for Daredevil: Born Again season 1, episode 1.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has delivered its share of hugely emotional moments, but its most heartbreaking deaths are events that we may never get over. The TV shows and movies of the MCU have introduced many Marvel characters into the franchise, as well as adapting several storylines from the comics to the screen. The high-stakes nature of some of the franchise’s stories means that not every chapter of the MCU has a happy ending, and sometimes characters die in heartbreaking or unexpected ways.

Throughout the MCU’s movie timeline, there have been a number of noteworthy deaths to occur in the franchise. However, it’s only a select few that can be considered heartbreaking for one reason or another, and even fewer still that seem to be impossible to get over. Whether they have lasting implications for the wider MCU or are simply devastating moments of drama, here are the 10 most heartbreaking deaths in the MCU that we’ll never get over.

10

Maria Hill

Secret Invasion (2023)

Close

Although Secret Invasion is more than deserving of its reputation as the worst TV show in the MCU, it did feature a few important moments and character deaths. Perhaps its most devastating was that of Maria Hill, Nick Fury’s trusted second-in-command, who had been a staple of the franchise since Phase 1 of the MCU. She is murdered in the show’s first episode by Gravik while he is disguised as Fury, framing the former SHIELD director and taking his most trusted advisor.

Hill’s death is heartbreaking on multiple levels. Her role within the franchise was always a supporting one, though she featured in a number of key moments, including the founding of the Avengers and the fall of SHIELD. Seeing her killed in such cold-blooded fashion was heartbreaking, as was the fact that it came in one of the MCU’s worst entries. On multiple levels, it did Hill little justice, making it seem even more difficult to get over.

9

Quicksilver

Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)

Close

Avengers: Age of Ultron stands out as the MCU’s least-popular Avengers movie to date, though it still features a number of memorable moments. While some stand as major triumphs, it also includes a heartbreaking death that has proven difficult to get over. Shortly after embracing their responsibilities as heroes, the Maximoff twins fight alongside the Avengers in the Battle of Sokovia. However, Quicksilver does not survive, sacrificing himself to save Hawkeye’s life.

It remains one of the most unexpected and heroic deaths in the history of the MCU, but that isn’t what makes it difficult to get over. The apparent wasted potential of Quicksilver as an MCU hero, especially played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, makes his death sting all the more, as does the implications it had on future stories. The loss of her twin brother added to Wanda’s grief that later precipitated her villain turn, making it an important and devastating chapter in MCU history.

8

Phil Coulson

The Avengers (2012)

Close

Within the wider context of the MCU’s story, the franchise has had few deaths with consequences as far-reaching as Phil Coulson. The SHIELD agent first introduced in 2008’s Iron Man, Coulson was featured heavily throughout Phase 1 of the MCU. His death at Loki’s hands in The Avengers in 2012 was the catalyst for the heroes to finally put aside their differences and work as a team, making it a landmark moment in the franchise.

It’s precisely this that makes it such a heartbreaking moment. The way that each of the Avengers grieved Coulson was evident, particularly as Nick Fury added a touch of drama to his death to further tug at the heroes’ heartstrings. Coulson’s death was a heroic and pivotal moment in the MCU’s history, and its importance makes it both poignant and difficult to get over.

7

Loki

Avengers: Infinity War (2018)

Close

Throughout Loki’s MCU story, he has died on multiple occasions. Some of those occasions turned out to be fake-outs, and all of them have proven impermanent in one form or another. However, the only one that was genuine also served as the most devastating, due to the context of the scene and Loki’s actions immediately before his death. Infinity War opened with Thanos attacking the ship of Asgardian refugees, and Loki stood up to the Mad TItan, only to be immediately choked to death.

The scene is the first time that Loki has acted as a genuine hero, without any thought for his own safety. Attempting to thwart Thanos’s plans proved a fatal mistake, and one that Loki paid for immediately. The death also proved to be permanent, with Loki’s subsequent appearances the result of a different timeline. Loki’s most heroic moment ending in his death was nothing short of heartbreaking, and it remains every bit as emotional even years later.

6

Vision

Avengers: Infinity War (2018)

Close

Vision was introduced into the MCU as the franchise’s newest powerhouse, though he wasn’t given much time to demonstrate his power before his death. Avengers: Infinity War saw the hero meet his end, as he was first killed by Wanda at his own request to stop Thanos from obtaining the Mind Stone contained in his head. However, it was immediately undone by Thanos using the Time Stone, who then ripped the Mind Stone from Vision’s head in a devastating moment.

Vision’s death is as brutal as it is upsetting. Seeing him die for a noble purpose in an emotional moment for both himself and Wanda is bittersweet, but then it’s ripped away to reveal that Thanos proved too powerful to stop. The pointlessness of Vision’s sacrifice and the brutality of his death makes it especially noteworthy, as well as difficult to get over despite his later resurrection.

5

Iron Man

Avengers: Endgame (2019)

When it comes to memorable deaths in the MCU, there are none as iconic as Iron Man’s. After losing to Thanos in Infinity War and then gathering the Infinity Stones from the past in Endgame’s time heist, the Avengers faced the Mad Titan again. The Battle of Earth ended in unforgettable fashion after Iron Man was able to regather the Stones during the fray, then use them to stop Thanos for good.

Iron Man’s death was more than just the character’s defining moment and his heroic ending. It was a turning point for the entire franchise, and one that gave him the most touching of exits. It paid off years of character development in a way that was both heartbreaking and triumphant, and considering the character’s emotional narrative arc, his death is something that MCU fans will almost certainly never get over.

4

Black Widow

Avengers: Endgame (2019)

Close

Shortly before Iron Man’s death in Avengers: Endgame, another founding Avenger met their end, albeit to much less fanfare. Black Widow and Hawkeye traveled to Vormir to recover the Soul Stone, learning that one of them would have to die in order to claim it. Her death would not only prove irreversible, but an incredibly heroic moment of redemption for the assassin turned Avenger.

The death of Black Widow is heartbreaking for many reasons, but none more prominent than the way that it was overshadowed. Iron Man’s sacrifice took the spotlight, and Black Widow’s own was not hailed in the same way. The understated nature of her sacrifice made it seem all the more heroic, as she chose to do so while placing total faith in her teammates to finish the fight against Thanos without her.

3

Yondu

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017)

Close

The MCU has seen many touching moments across its many entries, but there are a few that stand out as especially emotional. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 features one such moment, which comes in the immediate aftermath of Ego being killed. Facing the imminent threat of the vacuum of space, Star-Lord and Yondu find themselves sharing a final moment. Yondu declares that he has always seen himself as Quill’s father, and sacrifices himself to save the young hero.

Yondu’s death is one of the most emotionally devastating moments in the entire MCU. Learning how he really sees himself in Star-Lord’s life and hearing him explain why he’s willing to die for him is incredibly powerful, and it leads to an equally emotional funeral scene. His final moments being in service of his adopted son make his death all the more heartbreaking and difficult to get over.

2

Foggy Nelson

Daredevil: Born Again (2025)

Close

The beginning of episode 1 of Daredevil: Born Again brings its hero into the MCU spotlight with a powerful death. After being lured away from his friends, Daredevil learns too late that Foggy is being targeted by the villain Bullseye, arriving just in time to see his friend shot through the heart. As the hero and villain fight, Foggy lies in Karen Page’s arms, bleeding to death.

Foggy’s death is a devastating moment in MCU history. Considering he had made his formal debut in the franchise just minutes before, it seemed a cruel twist of fate that played a major part in Daredevil: Born Again’s story. The abrupt nature of his passing combined with the emotional reactions of both Matt and Karen make Foggy’s death utterly devastating, and it’s a moment that fans of the character will likely never get over.

1

Aunt May

Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)

Close

Spider-Man: No Way Home proved a pivotal entry into both the MCU and Spider-Man’s story, with multiple key moments occurring in its Multiversal narrative. The most heartbreaking moment was undoubtedly the death of Aunt May, which came after Norman Osborn was taken over by the Green Goblin. In an attempt to teach Spider-Man a lesson, the villain kills Aunt May.

Watching Peter’s guardian and only relative in the MCU die in such tragic fashion is truly devastating, not least because of Tom Holland’s emotional performance in the scene. Her last words being advice to Peter about his responsibilities form a key part of the hero’s story, and also proved a hugely emotional ending for the character. As such, it’s one of those deaths in the Marvel Cinematic Universe that will undoubtedly prove impossible to get over due to its massive emotional impact.
