The documentary explores how being dubbed the Brat Pack affected its members while they were coming of age in the movie industry.

While it’s more focused than Lovato’s documentary, it’s not quite as insightful. It will definitely be interesting to fans of the actors who have all maintained careers in Hollywood, but it’s also more slanted to those actors getting the chance to air their grievances than it is really exploring their history.

The leads are Antonia Gentry of Ginny & Georgia and Julia Lester of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. They carry much of the work of the movie, making it charming and fun while still sharing all of the awkwardness of being a teenager.

The movie follows a young woman mourning the loss of her boyfriend. While she struggles through her grief, however, certain songs associated with her late boyfriend cause her to travel back in time to moments in their past. Those around her simply think she’s having a seizure, causing people, including a new man she connects with, to disbelieve her time traveling at first.

The concept is an interesting one as songs can be emotional triggers in reality, so why would they not trigger time travel in a fantasy story? Self Reliance follows a man who is approached to be the star of a reality series. He will be hunted for 30 days, and if he can survive, he will win one million dollars. He thinks that he discovers a loophole in the hunt when it is revealed to him that he would only be killed while alone, so he recruits friends, family, and people he places ads for online to hang out with him so he’s never alone for long enough to be killed.

The movie marks the feature-length directorial debut of New Girl’sJake Johnson who also stars in the movie. He reunites with his Drinking Buddies costar Anna Kendric for the movie as well, and it is stacked with comedic talent, which is the big draw. The movie is funny even if the story itself can be confusing.

Children’s programming is a comforting pastime for a lot of people who love movies and television as an adult. Plenty of adults today have fond memories of Sesame Street or Reading Rainbow or Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood. Some of those memories might be tarnished if they decide to stream the horror movie Mr. Crocket.

The movie sees a demonic entity actually kidnap children through his television show. A mother goes on a quest to get her son back when she realizes what has happened. The series that the children love is clearly meant to send-up Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood, complete with puppets that the host talks to.

There is, of course, a catch when it comes to Mr. Crocket’s motivations in the movie. It’s rare that a horror movie makes you want to see more of the villain’s story play out, but here, that’s exactly what happens. Crocket is a sympathetic villain, one the audience can actually understand when they learn why he does what he does, and that makes the movie all the more interesting.

When their music first became popular, they gave a voice to the marginalized LGBTQ+ community at a time when celebrities could still interact with fans online in relatively small spaces. They utilized outlets like MySpace and Tumblr to share information and build community. As a result, someone else was easily able to gain access to their information and impersonate Tegan Quinn.

The documentary highlights how, for nearly two decades, fans and others in the industry alike have been catfished by someone pretending to be Quinn. Most of the exchanges are innocent enough friendships, but they mark a stark betrayal of trust when the truth is uncovered. The documentary allows Quinn herself to share her side of the story as well as some of the people who were catfished by her impersonator.

The movie sees the group’s connection to one another tested by various dramatic circumstances. Adultery, addiction, and murder all play their parts in the movie. While that might sound like it all belongs in a soap opera, the movie is able to exist in a heightened sense of reality, finding the hilarity in ridiculous situations and the tragedy that can befall anyone in their life. The performances of the cast – Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, Sanaa Lathan, and Uzo Aduba – help to ground the movie in reality.
