10 Actors We Still Can’t Believe Were In Superhero Movies

Superhero movies occupy a corner of the film industry that tends to be separated from traditional films, but that hasn’t stopped some surprisingly big names popping up in these movies. Despite making up a monumental portion of the global box office in the last couple of decades, superhero movies are often viewed as less important or powerful than other movies. This has led to movies often being excluded from awards, and notable actors tending to avoid the genre all together.

However, despite preconceived notions of what cinema should be, there are several actors who chose to take a chance on a superhero movie. For some, the results were outstanding, but not every risk paid off. Regardless, the appearance of more prominent talent is a great step forward for superhero movies as a whole.

Clancy Brown As Parallax

Green Lantern

The Parallax feeds in Green Lantern

When Green Lantern came out in 2011, the movie struggled to connect with audiences. Despite adapting stories about one of the most exciting characters from DC, and the MCU bringing superhero movies further into the limelight, this movie missed the mark. Both financially and critically, and in terms of the overall delivery, the movie was a flop. But despite that, it still managed to pull in notable actor, Clancy Brown, to play the role of the big bad villain, Parallax.

While he didn’t appear physically, only lending his voice to a large CGI character, this was still a waste of an incredibly talented actor and voice performer. Since then, Brown has had a chance to experience higher-calibre superhero movies, joining the MCU to voice Surtur in Thor: Ragnarok, and on the small screen when he appeared as Salvatore Maroni in The Penguin. But as far as Green Lantern is concerned, the film is better off left in the past where it can fade from public memory.

Harry Styles As Starfox

Eternals

On a different note, some superhero movies have managed to pull in impressive castings from unexpected A-listers beyond the realm of film and TV. And while Harry Styles already chose to test the water in terms of acting for a handful of movies prior to his debut in the MCU, it was still a huge surprise to see the global pop star show up in a post-credits scene.

And beyond that, he played Starfox, a character from the comics who is the brother of Thanos. This shocking reveal was thrilling to witness, but with the role appearing in a movie that received such mixed reviews and one of the MCU’s worst box office returns, it may not have served the actor as well as it could have. But despite Eternals’ struggle to connect with audiences, it had a surprisingly stacked cast.

Bill Skarsgård As Kro

Eternals

Continuing with Eternals for a moment, this movie also served as the debut of another huge actor in Hollywood, Bill Skarsgård. While Bill’s father has been a part of the MCU since 2011 when he appeared in Thor, Bill has been establishing his own career with various roles as villains, heroes, and more. Despite this, his first role in the MCU is easy to miss since he never actually appears on-screen.

Instead, Skarsgård lent his voice to the Deviant, Kro. Kro is the monstrous creature that evolves and begins to adapt powers from the Eternals that he kills, eventually transforming into a being that more closely resembles an intelligent humanoid. Considering the movie did not get a good reception, it’s possible Skarsgård doesn’t mind not getting noticed for the role, but regardless, his presence elevated the film.

Marlon Brando As Jor-El

Superman (1978)

While superhero films have become more popular today, and the rise of the MCU and other superhero properties has helped to assert this genre as being a worthy part of the film landscape, there were very different opinions held in 1978, when the first Superman movie starring Christopher Reeve came out. And when Marlon Brando, star of The Godfather, was cast to play the father of Superman, it was a huge moment for the genre.

Brando was a widely respected and celebrated actor who often appeared in dramatic, tense, and complex roles. With the comic books making a character that possesses all of those qualities in Jor-El, Brando was an ideal pick to play the character, and his performance is legendary. However, many people were of the opinion that this comic book movie was beneath the talents of someone like Brando.

Christian Bale As Gorr the God Butcher

Thor: Love and Thunder

Christian Bale is one of the most versatile and gifted actors alive. With his breakout role in American Psycho, Bale shot from relative obscurity to worldwide acclaim. Then, over the course of his career, Bale got more experimental as he played various roles that allowed him to explore the lives and challenges of various characters. Which also included a stint as Bruce Wayne, aka Batman, in Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy.

Now, while this meant Bale was already acquainted with superhero roles, it was still a shock to see him tackle a minor role as a villain in Thor: Love and Thunder, especially considering the more comedic and light nature that the series had adopted. Bale certainly had the acting chops to pull off an intense character like Gorr the God-Butcher, but the movie hardly used the character, and Bale’s performance was swallowed up in a sea of declining humor.

5

Anthony Hopkins As Odin

Thor

Anthony Hopkins' Odin walks with young Thor and Loki in the MCU

Similar to Brando’s stint as a superfather, Anthony Hopkins, who became an icon due to roles such as playing Hannibal Lecter opposite Jodie Foster in Silence of the Lambs, found himself playing the role of the Norse god, Odin. In the first film, under the direction of serious dramatic director Kenneth Branagh, Hopkins delivers gravitas and intensity to the role.

However, as the series progressed, and Hopkins continued returning to play minor or side roles with more humor injected, it became increasingly unbelievable that this renowned performer had dedicated several films in the twilight of his career to the MCU. However, his presence was pivotal in the series, and it helped to further define the story of Thor.

Angelina Jolie As Thena

Eternals

Returning to Eternals, while the cast was stacked with impressive actors and incredible talent both in front of and behind the camera, one of the most surprising additions to the team was the lovely Angelina Jolie. Jolie has built a career as an action hero, with several incredible roles under her belt, but playing Thena in the MCU was a surprise.

Kevin Feige recently confirmed that Avengers: Doomsday will see the Avengers, Wakandans, Fantastic Four, Thunderbolts, and the X-Men coming together to fight Doctor Doom…but what about the Eternals? There’s an entire team just waiting to join the fight, and they already missed Infinity War and Endgame? That said, the Eternals were last seen off-world/facing Arishem’s judgment…so maybe they’re busy?

In saying that, Jolie does a splendid job playing the broken Eternal whose mind has been fractured and fights between forgotten memories and the present. Among the entire lineup, Jolie delivers one of the best performances. Despite no plans for an Eternals 2, it would be great to see Jolie return to the role.

Tommy Lee Jones As Two-Face

Batman Forever

Tommy Lee Jones as Two-Face looking confused in Batman Forever

Tommy Lee Jones has been appearing on the screen since the start of the 1970s. His career has seen him soar to incredible highs, and while he was not always cast in the leading roles, his talents as a performer are undeniable. This is also proven by the fact that he has been nominated for an Oscar three times, and won for Best Supporting Actor for his role in The Fugitive opposite Harrison Ford.

However, on the back of his Oscar success, Jones tackled a surprising role as Harvey Dent, aka Two-Face, in Batman Forever. Directed by Joel Schumacher and continuing the legacy of the Tim Burton Batman movies, this was a decidedly goofy and quirky movie. Which made it highly unusual to see Jones tackle a comic book character with half a prosthetic face. Despite this, he gave Dent a lot of character, and elevated the film.

2

Michael Douglas As Hank Pym

Ant-Man

Likewise, Michael Douglas is a widely celebrated actor whose time on the big screen has seen him win two Oscars, with one for a Leading Role. Douglas is a legend in film, and his career has already seen him tackle dozens of tense, dramatic, and compelling stories. But when the MCU approached him to play Hank Pym, aka, the original Ant-Man, it definitely raised eyebrows.

Meanwhile, Paul Rudd, a comedy actor, was cast as Scott Lang, the man who would be Pym’s successor in Ant-Man. The duo had surprisingly good chemistry, and despite coming from different worlds and eras of the industry, they were able to compliment each other and create something unique. And it appears that Douglas relished his time in the MCU, becoming one of the Earth-616’s first ever superheroes.

Michael Caine As Alfred Pennyworth

The Dark Knight Trilogy

Michael Caine as Alfred in Batman Begins, serious at Bruce's funeral

Michael Caine’s screen career began all the way back in 1946, making him one of the most established and experienced performers on this list. While he worked on a film like Deathtrap in 1982 with the then Superman actor, Christopher Reeve, Caine tended to stick to more classical, dramatic, fun, and established films. However, when approached by Christopher Nolan to play one of the most iconic characters in DC Comics, he jumped on the opportunity.

Nominated for a total of six Oscars, and taking home two, Caine is a treasure of Hollywood. But despite that legendary status, he threw himself into playing the humble and wise butler and confidante to Bruce Wayne, Alfred Pennyworth. Caine’s performance is essential to The Dark Knight trilogy, and paired with the outstanding Christian Bale, the movies became so much more than simple superhero stories.
